There is no draft! Congressman Rangel of New York introduced a measure to re-instate the draft last year. It's the Uniformed Service Act of 2006. It's gone nowhere in the House of Representatives. The President doesn't want a draft. The Democrats don't want a draft. The Republicans don't want a draft. The Joint Chiefs of Staff don't want a draft. None of the unified and specified commanders wants a draft. The only one who wants one is Charlie Rangel and that's because of the high rate of unemployment in his district among males 18-30 years of age.
So, unless you enlist as a volunteer, your're not going to serve.

Most of that is just propaganda to make people hate the president more. There is not a need for a draft, the president has not suggested one even. I am not a fan of Bush but this is just baseless propaganda.

I agree with some other answers, the founding fathers had militias that you were required to serve in. Switzerland, the worlds longest lasting democracy to date, requires military service. Everyone has a Constitutional and moral duty to be ready to fight in defense of their freedom and their country even if they don't sign up with an organized force.

The best way to not be drafted is to volunteer. They can't draft you if you are already serving. If you volunteer you can also choose which branch of service you get... at least you could get into something you don't mind all that much. Why are you so afraid of serving your country anyway?

It will just be a rumour.

There are two reasons that there will not be a draft (unless the U.S gets involved in another world war).

Firstly the elctorate would not support it and so it would never get passed as a statute.

Secondly Vietnam showed that conscript armies can not effectively fight an unpopular war and there is simply not the will, discipline, or professionalism to get the job done.

Modern wars are fought with smaller groups of highly trained and motivated volunteers, not press ganged masses of people who do not want to carry a gun.

i doubt there would be another draft. it wouldn't be politically feasible. But let me get a bit philosophical.

Because you cannot use a citizen's army to further Imperialism. The French hired native mercenaries to serve in the Foreign Legion in North Africa. Over 90% of British forces in India were native mercenaries. The Belgians got enslaved Congolese sepoys to serve them.

The US tried doing it in Vietnam. And they failed. The ROTC recruitment numbers dropped from almost 200,000 to hardly 70,000. Anywhere between 50,000 and 100,000 soldiers deserted and fled. The RITA Organizations claimed many people, over 60,000 definitely. Fragging was at an all time high. and we all know about the draft dodgers.

I don't think the American public will agree to spend blood for control of Iraqi oil.

It will never pass. Whoever told you was just trying to get a rise out of you. The American people don't have the stomach for a draft. That may change as the war on terror continues.

It has only been suggested by anti-war types. Democrats wouldn't dare pass it and playing games like that will likely leave a bitter taste in the mouth of the voters come next election.

if you are so worried about just join the ROTC "run off to Canada" club. I do not believe their is going to be a draft. But who knows anything can happen, if you are so worried join the navy or coast guard one of the safest branches in the military.

It's not yet approved nor do I believe it will ever be passed. It's people who pass around saying there's going to be a draft that sends America into chaos.

Relax, there isn't going to be one.

There will NEVER be another draft. Any President, Senator, or Congressman who brought it back would commit career suicide since they would never be elected again.

One Dem wants for every man and women under the age of forty five to be drafted.
