I'm Iranian and I reach the Prophet Muhammad from my father through his daughter (his sons did not survive childhood) The name for us is "Seyyed" which kinda means "Sir" or "Lord". My father's mother has a family-tree that goes to his grandson. But the only record I know of from my father's father is that (this is confusing, please try keep track) the only record is that my grandfather's grandfather used to sign his name as "Seyyed" and that is about 200 years ago. How can I be sure?

Also, is there a website or book or place where you can check your ancestry if you are Iranian?

you want to know if you are a sayed or not ?? is that it ??

:)

you can ask in the hawza in iran ... and they can tell you ..

but if you do not live in Iran .. tell me your full name and I will tell you if you are a sayed or not ..I am a muslim shia so you see we realy know about all the sada's Genealogy ..

in these matters we do not use records .. we know each others' history and Genealogy because Arabs are very sensitive ,focused and careful towards Genealogy due to that we only needs someones name and we will give him his whole Genealogy ..for example if your last name is Mosawee then you are a sayed .. I do not need apaper to tell me that ..

I will help you but I need to know your full name ..

pleas write at ashly3554@yahoo.com

I just looked up an article on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seyyed and it referred me on to the title SAYYID to mean what you stated above--an honorific title of "Sir" or "Lord". Your grandfather's grandfather (aka your great-great grandfather), in this case, would have used the title Seyyid just as western men use "Mister" and, if I understood the article right, not necessarily as a surname or family name. Does your grandmother have any other records that would mention a surname?? I have typed in Sayyid or Seyyid in the search on several genealogy sites, but nothing comes up which makes me think the word means "Sir" or "Mister" and that a regular family name will be needed to trace your family tree.

Salaam Alaykum. I hope this helps you: Descendants of Prophet Adam (Alaihis Salam) http://www.rootsweb.com/~lkawgw/adam1.htm

This model continues for many pages. The author states, "The above lineage from Prophet Adam Alaihi Salam to Prophet Ibrahim Alaihi Salam may contain inaccuracies but is published here as reported in the lineage of the Prophet Muhammad Sallalahu Alaihi Wa Sallam from the book "Ar Raheeq Al Makhtum by Safi-Ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri that details the biograpy of the Prophet Muhammad Sallalhu Alaihi Wa Sallam and The Stories of the Prophets by Ibn Kathir."

Also, there was a similar discussion on Rootsweb several years ago: http://genforum.genealogy.com/saudiarabia/messages/19.html

I would respectfully suggest you contact the Islamic Cultural Center in Dearborn, one of the largest Islamic populations in the Western hemisphere. This group is extremely well-educated on your history and genealogy. They have been tremendously helpful to myself and others in the past. I wish you well on your search to prove your lineage.

Try www.ancestry.com. Also, try the Mormons. They trace genealogy around the globe. You do not have to subscribe to www.ancestry.com; it is available at a lot of public libraries.
You can also google a lot of names...a lot of my ancestors are in google's database.
Yes, some of my ancestors are Iranian...Egyptian...Turkish...Irsraelis...every continent (except Antarctica.
