you can try to find them on the beach etc. like the other people suggested, or you can go to a jewelery maker. What I think you are probably looking for is called a cabochon. A jewelery maker will cut the stone and then polish the edges down until it is an oval shape ready to be mounted into a setting. The can be large for necklaces or small ones for rings. If this is what you are looking for you might look for jewelery shows or gem and mineral shows around where you live. People will sell just the cabochons that you can mount yourself. You can get some really nice ones for reasonable prices instead of paying high dollar at the mall.

Most stores like Walmart and Kmart sell them in bags. They are smooth and come in many colors.
Pier 1 imports has these stones for decorating.
Stores with spiritual themes that sell incense, burners, books, windchimes, oils and astrological items also have them.
Also... some people make them for you. They are stone setters and jewelers.
The cheapest way is to look on a beach or the ground.

Almost anywhere. Pull off on a gravel road and look for one. Or go to the mall and find the Romancing The Stone store and buy one.
