Usually people do feel silly, but people use it to fit the occassion, such as a father smiling at his son catching a pitched ball. A coach or an elder might say it. It's kind of easygoing and lighthearted encouragement, but usually reserved for males.

I think it's kinda wierd.

My dad use to say it to our dog when he did some kind of trick, he'd rub his head, say "attaboy," and give him a treat.
That's about the only time I heard it used.

I say it from time to time. I even say "Bloody Hell" from time to time and get some strange looks (I guess unless it is said with an English accent, people don't expect it!). I don't feel silly saying anything really expect "whoopsie daisy"! ;)

Yes people do say it, although its popularity has fallen off. Usually it is an older person or someone who is saying it in a sarcastic way.

Only really meant for dogs.
Its like when you talk to a baby, you tend to talk in a higher pitch then normal, and say things like 'whos a beautiful boy?' or 'cute' things like 'dody (dummy)' 'bot, bot (bottle)'
In that scene its ok to talk like that, but if i were asked to talk like that to my dad, i'd feel a complete fool.

It's an OLD phrase. I'd imagine only the elderly say it - mainly males.
