Have been invited to a friend's son's commissioning ceremony. What's an appropriate gift, besides the obvious, money?

It's a book, available from Amazon dot com. "General Smedley Darlington Butler: The Letters of A Leatherneck 1898-1931" Author: Anne Cipriano Venzon.
Smedley Butler is still held up as the ideal in the Marine Corps. He served as Commandant of Marines and is the only man I know who has two awards of the Medal of Honor for bravery under fire.
It's a bit pricey ($115.00), but I'm sure he will appreciate it.

From experience - choose any of the following:
1 x mobile phone, compact
1 x solar charger for same
1 x water-tight boots, decent pair of
1 x quality boot insoles - ease my tired feet
1 x socks - always needed
1 x extra boot laces, very versatile
1 x boot cream, for waterproofing of
1 x personal grooming kit
1 x soft toilet paper :)
1 x Sense of humour (he'll need this most!)

Seriously - get him something compact that won't fall apart and has no easily lost bits - a simple AM/FM transistor radio is always a good gift for any soldier (maybe a wind-up one)

A good nights sleep might be appreciated (sooner than he thinks), or simply your best wishes and support.

Every real man wants GEAR.

A military watch, such as a Kobold, perhaps a really good diver's watch like Skorpion

Try: WatchuSeek.com (wristwatch website) for info

Or a knife--look at Brigade Quartermaster's website--get him a really good double-edged boot knife, black-finish, Tanto blade maybe

Or maybe a night vision scope. A sea kayak. A hunting bow. Anything along these lines would be ideal.

He invited you and it very important for you to attend. There is no gift involved. Being their is what he wants. You need to hug and congratulate him just as if that were your son... Commissioning is truly an honor and is to be shared. He sharing this experience with his friends...--- you

A bar of butter. (Gag gift because a 2nd Lt's insignia is a gold bar).

A Marine will accept anything though. Something is better than nothing.

I really don't know what's appropriate, but one thing you can pass on is my thanks for his service.
