A co-worker says she always uses a straw when drinking from a can - she says that touching your lips to the can cause cancer

The cans should be safe to touch by mouth. They may use bug spray in the warehouses, so it is suggested to wipe up the chemicals on the cans or using a straw.

Another reason is there may be bugs or rats running over the top of cans, so to prevent catching some diseases.

Soda cans are made from aluminum. Aluminum production is a known carcinogen(something that is known to cause cancer), according to the American Cancer Society, but aluminum itself is not a carcinogen. So touching your lips to the aluminum cannot give you cancer. The only way aluminum could possibly give you cancer is if you are in the midst of aluminum production and you breath in aluminum dust particles.

Many things can increase the risk of cancer.
Not all of these have been identified.
Drinking from a can is not high on the list of known causes.
