A very wise person that I had come to respect said that the greater your ability to appreciate simple, every day events, the more likely you would be to find happiness. The utter truth of this came to me while walking the floor with my granddaughter when she had colic as an infant. She finally drifted off with a little smile on her face. I wept tears of joy, not because I could get some much needed sleep, but to have witnessed that sweet smile of contentment. I realized that many times in my past, while walking the floor with one of my own children as a young mother, I had felt great relief when they drifted off because I could finally get some sleep, and prepare for another workday. I had to go to work with only a few hours of sleep many times, but I finally realized it was a blessing. Doing the things that it takes to make people I care about more comfortable has become a privilege, not a duty. I am finally able to act contrary to my basically selfish nature, and the more I succeed, the better I feel about everything. I have also come to believe that sleep is over-rated!
