Your not paying the artists any money when you download your music. THAT is what I call illegal.
It won't be illegal only if you download non copyrighted music. But these days who doesn't copyright their music?
It is very unlikely that you would get caught... but.... a friend of a friend brought her computer in to get fixed and they saw that she had Limewire with at least 2000 illegally downloaded songs. She had to pay a fine of 250$..
Its probably better to just buy it from iTunes. Better be safe than sorry!

Limewire is like a Gun. A gun is legal -- you can use it for target practice, you can use it for hunting, you can use it for self defense. However, a gun can also be used to murder, commit crimes, etc. It's up to YOU to use it properly.
If you're going to download copyrighted material ( music, software, games, movies, etc.) or illegal content ( child porn, etc.) then yes, it's illegal and you're going to get your @ss fried. If you don't break the law with it, then you're fine.
Note: This is how everything in life works -- unless you subscribe to liberal idealogy in which case you would be for making anything that can be used illegally, illegal.

the software itself is legal; downloading copyrighted works (such as music, the most common use of limewire) is illegal.

P2P and Bit Torrents are 100% legal to have and use.
However "You" must make sure you don't download "Anything" that you don't have a legal right to have.
Even if you download a mp3 that you have already pruchased on CD you have No legal right to download it.
