just call some agents up and tell them the type of car that you will be getting , your age, address, etc. and they will tell you the cost of the policy. you pay first payment by credit card or go in person and give them the money/get receipt. they will give you a temporary insurance card for your purse/car and give you a BINDER . The binder is a paper that says you have insurance until your policy gets finalized by them.
Do not even think of trying to drive the car off the lot. If you are without insurance for even one day / you will pay more for your car insurance premium because they will now say that you were driving without insurance . I made the mistake not to pay a premium on when the premium renewed becuase The car was garaged / wasn't being used . I thought why pay if it's not being driven. I just paid for insurance on the one car. Wrong. If you have a car , registered with DMV, you must have insurance at all times. Or they will suspend your license , charge you fees , can impound the car. Insurance companies will also jack up your premiums.

Insurance goes with vehicles, not with drivers. So if you bring a friend to drive, and don't have insurance, it won't be covered. Get the information about the car, VIN, year, make, model. Call your insurance agent and get insurance on your new car before you drive it one inch. You certainly didn't think they gave forgiveness if you have an accident in the first few days, did you?
If you are financing it, the finance company will probably insist on full coverage also, so check that out before you get your insurance in place. I'd suggest you go see an independent agent rather than one only representing one company if you want to get the best deal.
Enjoy your new car.
Added: Just so you know, the temporary paper tags you get while waiting for your permanent ones to arrive do NOT allow you to drive without insurance for 30 days, so please ignore that very wrong advice you were given.

Taking the car off the dealers lot is foolish in every state and illegal in many states. Not to mention what the finance will do to you if you wreck it without insurance on it.
Get the make, model & VIN number and call an agent to buy a policy before you take the car off the lot. You would not believe how many people have an accident while bringing the car home for the first time. I even handled a claim in Iowa where the lady didn't even make off the parking lot before hitting one of the dealerships other cars. Luckily she had coverage. You won't unless you buy a policy.
Don't take the risk of ruining your new car or worse yet causing injury to somebody else while being uninsured. It is not worth it.

You will probably need insurance to drive the car off the lot. I know that in California, most dealers will work with you to get insurance when you buy the car, but be aware that it is a lot more expensive than getting it on your own.

If you don't have car insurance but intend to within a few days you can drive the car home yourself. Pryor to buying the car call the insurance company of your choice and tell them of your intentions and they will put a three day binder on the car so it will be insured until you get into the office and sign a policy.

Insurance goes with the car, not the person.
If it's a new car, the dealer will deliver it for you
useing his 'dealer` plate, which he will take with
him when he leaves.
(For what a new car costs, they should be willing to do just about anything.)
You can't drive it without plates.
You can't get plates without insurance.
Most dealers will help you with registration and recommend insurance agents, but you can probably find a better deal on the insurance if you shop around.

If you are buying a new car you will have to have insurance which is required by the finance company to protect their interests. .
Shop around for the best price and you will need the VIN number of the car that you are buying and give it to the insurance company. Get the insurance first if you are definitely buying that car.
