This question is a matter of opinion, so here's mine. I am a firm believer that the model 700 Remington is the best bolt action rifle made. I have owned this model in several calibers and must say that each and every on was a pleasure to shoot, and extremely accurate with the correct loads and optics. I have many rifles in many calibers and of late have been overly impressed with the Savage line of rifles. The newer models with the accutrigger are absolutely great. You can by them in the police sniper models and they will get the yardage you were talking about. Good luck with your purchase.

To start off, I love the 7mm Rem. Mag. I am 14, and I have hunted with my grandpa's Winchester Model 70 Westerner in 7 Mag. for the past two years, and have killed two deer with it. I agree, the Winchester M 70 is a really sleek, beautiful rifle, and you can not go wrong if you buy one. I do not like Sako, I think they are ugly guns. And the Weatherby Accumark is one of the most accurate, as well as one of the best rifles you can buy under $400. Though, for the best rifle around? I have to give it to Remington and their model 700. It is still the most popular, most durable rifle on the market for sportsmen today. Best of luck on your rifle selection.

It's not even on your list of favorites but you should check out the Remington 700 series of rifles before you buy. I admit I am personally biased here but I own 13 Remington 700's myself. I sell the Remington 700 series in my Gun Shop at a rate of about 6 to 1 over any other brand. For the quality and workmanship, not to mention the out of the box accuracy and PRICE. I honestly don't think you could do better. I have a few Winchester Model 70's , (2) Sako's and love them too, but just not as much. Carlos Hathcock "Mr. White Feather" himself also owned and shot Remington 700's along with his Winchester Model 70 .308's. Just an opinion and something to think about before you buy.........
NOTE## There is no such thing as a "Medium" power in regards to .308 caliber rifles. The Trijicon TR 21 Scope is a $600 Scope and not for a beginner or someone just starting out. ANY full size rifle is capable of 800 yards shots in 308 caliber. I realize from your info that this is all new to you and I respect that, but you have a lot to learn about before you buy your new rifle. Take your time and listen to whats being said here..There is a lot of good, accurate information being shared.....

Remington 700 is probably the best
they build a good rifle to start with and most custom guns are built using the 700 action so most competent rifle smiths are very familiar with it.
If you are going to be shooting 800+yards take it to a competent rifle smith and get it accurized.
also if you new to shooting have plenty of ammo and time because you will need it at that range

I have been using the same remington 700 for about twenty years in a 30-06, and wouldn't trade it for any other gun. I also have a Henry rifle but still like the remington better. I think Bill Jordan and Jackie Bushman both use Remingtons on their shows.

Don't overlook the Savage 110 bolt action rifle offered in quite a variety of calibers. Most law enforcement agencies use them for sniper situations; they are very accurate and dependable; Google them and read about them. You can spend as much money as you want for a rifle if you want bells, whistles and a shiny finish. If you want value and reliability look at the Savage.

About ten years ago I was shopping around for a southpaw bolt gun for one of my kids for deer hunting. I gave the Sako a harder look than I would have otherwise, because it was chambered in 7mm08, and that's close to the perfect deer cartridge. It looked like a good choice, so I went with it. The more I used it in working up loads, the more impressed I became. When I gave it to him, we went out in the back yard so he could try it out, and his first five shots went into 5/8". The fit, finish, workmanship, everything about that rifle is impressive. I have a plethora of "Remingchesters" and some more expensive rifles, but none is better than that Sako, and it needed no work; it came out of the box that way.
