What type of deer? Red, Fallow, Sika, Roe, Munjac or Chinese water deer?
The deer in question depends on the stalk.
Ensure you have the correct calibre and bullet weight for your quarry and take a heart and lungs shot. No point in using a .308 on a roebuck. Damaged meat costs money.
A good dog is always handy in case of a runner.

You have a good question here. For starters using a .22 for deer hunting is illegal as it is too small of a calibre for big game. Using a .243 or higher will get the job done. I personally use a .30-06 and in the past few years of using this firearm I have had a handful of deer run less than 100yards and drop. Now with that said their are a few good places for shot placement. Vital organs: If you aim just behind the front shoulder blade you will hit the lungs and heart and will be a quick clean kill. Head/neck shot: This will be a good instant kill if done right. break its neck or hit the skull plate and it will be a quick clean kill. But this is also a shot that can be screwed up too. I've had several clean kills this way but I've also screwed this shot up too. I'd only reccomend this if you know your rifle and can shoot VERY accurately. Spine shot: I had some shots where i broke the deers back and was instantly killed. Only problem with this is it can ruin the backstraps some of the best meat eh. But the main thing is you need to know your firearm, shot placement and be accurate in your shooting. Being accurate is key. I would say shoot for the vitals cause they will go down regardless might be right where you shot or 150yards but regardless they will go down shortly if you aim for the vitals Hope this helps

as far as shot placement the best is with the deer facing 1/4 turn away from you,And shoot about 2 inches behind the front shoulder about 1/2 way from the top of its back and the bottom of belly. This angle will give you the best chance of getting a hit on its heart and atleast 1 lung if not both lungs.
GOOD LUCK & HAPPY HUNTING

Scout well, pick out the deer you want, and go after him with a gun chambered for a well-balanced cartridge appropriate for the purpose. There's no need for a magnum, and no point in trying to use the smallest possible caliber. Then do as the old Scot said: "Git as close as ye can, laddie, and then git 10 yards closer." Put a good bullet like a Nosler Partition with a sectional density of around .26 into his heart, and you have venison.

Generally I aim directly behind the front leg 4-6 inches above the bottom of the chest. Note that if you are in a tree stand you will want to aim a little higher due to the path the bullet will take through the deer. If the deer is laying down again aim behind the leg/shoulder but equal distance from top to bottom (center mass).

Best way to shoot a deer? With a rifle of at least caliber .243 Winchester. Neck shots are best, but heart/lung shots work well. These are just behind the the shoulder.
Best.

Aim for the ''boiler room'', just behind the shoulder. If you shoot the deer in the heart/lung area, it will be a quick, humane kill.

just behind the shoulder will collapse its lungs making it incapable to run very far.
i don't like the .243 win, but its very popular. i wouldn't use anything smaller than a .25/06 with 120 grain bullets.
the ideal whitetail caliber in my opinion is the 7mm08 Remington with 140 grain bullets. a lot of popular calibers include .270 win, .30/06, .308 win, or magnums, including 7mm mag, .300 win mag.
if i couldn't have a 7mm, i would get a .270 or a .30/06.
good luck hope you get the deer you want.
