I cant remember the actual term for this, but it is way for someone to train in the art of a weapon, without needing a sparring partner. But are there any good ones for a bo staff or a jo staff, and which will teach me the basics of wielding one?

Do an internet search for what you're looking for. But really, I must stress the importance of getting the proper instruction.

You mean katas. There are many books and videos on Bo and Jo forms available. I know there are books on Bo written by Fumio Demura as well as those on Jo forms in Aikido written by Sensei Morihiro Saito and I'm sure there are a lot more by other authors. But still, supervision by a competent instructor is still needed to make sure you are doing the forms correctly.
