it would interest me to know why people would be against organ donation in the event of their death.... i am a registered donor and ive registered my 2 year old son... obviously i dont want or expect either of us to die but in the tragic event of it happening id want to be able to give the gift of life to someone in need... ive asked a prev question in a slightly different format re the subject a few days ago and il explain my reasons again in the hope of making any doubters reconsider.... my 20 year old sister has the life limiting illness cystic fibrosis... it is a genetic disease and shes suffered since birth and needs daily routines of physiotherapy, loadsa medication and frequent hospital visits/stays.... she now relys heavily on oxygen and a wheelchair to get around and has never experienced the normal life that most 20 year olds lead.... she is now awaiting a double lung transplant and has been given just 18 months to live without it.i hope this makes you think about reconsider

Flossy, because then people would have to face/accept their own mortality, most just want to live life without the thought of their life coming to an end, slowly. People dwell in uncertainty and they are afraid. You have to be mindful of the feelings of people, although what you are saying has truth as far as this world is concerned and morally, at least. Such a thing could save a life afterwards.

However there are some traditions and beliefs that do not seek to mess with a dead body in that manner, nor even touch one.

There are many people who consider it "creepy" to give a "part" of themselves in such a manner.

There are some for whose religion forbids it.

There are some who are on drugs - - prescribed or otherwise - - such that the donation may cause the recipient harm; such folks can't (or, at least, shouldn't) even give blood.

Some don't want to take the chance that donations would be given to "bad" people (i.e., criminals; not of the same religion or racial background; etc), so they opt out entirely.

Some people mistakenly believe that the organs must be donated while the donor is still alive (many organs and tissue are viable a short time after death).

I'd also like to point out that the majority of organ donations usually end up being rejected by the recipient due to many physiological factors; it isn't just "cut-and-paste" (just as an example, my very good friends' father needed a kidney, and all four of his children volunteered for the transplant, but, after nearly a year of medical poking and prodding, only one of the kids turned out to have a transplantable kidney, and then, during the operation, it was discovered that the donor kidney had a mild abnormality, which was deemed "okay"; it has been over a year, and, so far, it was a huge success, but look at what they all had to go through, and it was very nearly a non-match!).

Given the above, everyone is entitled to their reasons for not donating, and it would be wise not to be critical ("Judge not, lest ye be judged!").

I agree with you, i dont understand really why people don't want to donate their organs once they're dead, I would donate what i could while im alive. I have been on a donor list since i was 16 and both my children are registered too.

I know religion comes into it and some people wish to be buried/cremated as a whole being but wouldnt that be an honour to save someones life on your passing, i think it would be a great honour.

I hope your sister gets her transplant and good on you for being on the register x

Some religions and cultures consider it mutilating the body.
People aren't necessarily against it.

I think people should be encouraged to donate their organs. That would be the last good gesture you can do here on earth.

my mum promised her mum on her mums deathbed that she would never donate her organs due to around that time a lot of bad things happening surrounding organ donation.
since becoming a nurse, mum has changed her mind, and feels her mum would agree with it nowadays.
suppose people of her age might be against it for similar reasons.
i joined the register when i was about 10 and could make my own decision about it. i couldnt imagine wasting my useful body.

I 'would' (not saying i will) want to really of course i would want to save some childs life the body to me is pointless after death i don't even understand graves! But i wouldn't put my self down for it out of pure fear that someone would get their hands on that list and go and try to murder me! Alot of homeless people and kids get kidnapped all the time for their organs for rich people its disgusting and not many people are aware of this.

i'm a sprint to previous to donate an organ or perhaps my eyes yet whilst available if the ought to apply even one iota of me whom ever might income please use. If i'm ineffective my physique isn't something extra suitable than an empty shell. My driving force licenses and scientific documents nonetheless checklist me as an organ detonator.
