A governess is an employed person who manages the home. A Home Manager makes sure that our clothes are clean, our shelter is in repair, there is food on the table, and the children are set for school and extra-curricular activites. However, it does not mean that they have to do all the work themselves. The governess is helped by a cook or cooks, a wash-maid, a driver or a stable manager. Usually a family of three will employ a minimum of three people - The governess, a maid and a driver.
If your name does not start with King or Queen, this can this be ridiculous? My wife is the nanny, cook, driver and nurse - maybe it's time she should get paid 150K dollars a year plus overtime almost everyday when she's not sick.

Much of the time now, they employ nannies, or an Au Pair is a popular thing to do. I don't hear them being called governesses these days. My husband and I have been interested in having a Nanny for our baby, so it is definitely not something of the past.

If someone is qualified to be a governess, they usually get a job at a school. Au pair s are like Nanny's or babysitters but they don't have the knowledge a governess has. I think it would be great to resurrect the governess now that home schooling is becoming more the trend.

No I never would have wanted one including mary Poppins.....i was not overly protective...but things HAD to be communicated...i am in communications...and that is what my life has largely been about...thus, having both of them get the POINT of any number of things was what I needed to do....and I did. a Governess....no....A part time baby sitter to take he heat off of me, YES.......not even really a nanny. I had maids...even live i but that was different...our dunamics called for it and could be afforded. They grew up great! Good question though and NO it is not nor will it ever be a thing of the past.....there will be needs for this, say on a trip and i stick withthe baby sitter coming along, but at he same time, she i a part of the vacation and deserves a little time off too. The concept of requiring assistance will always be en vogue. It is simply a matter of self discretion and finances.

I'm sure very wealthy people still employee governesses, but yes, it's largely a thing of the past, mostly because children go to school nowadays and don't need a live-in tutor.

I would have loved to have had one - and a cook and a lot else besides. As it was I couldn't afford such so I had to raise my four boys in my own and I didn't do such a bad job even though I do say it myself (although they would tell you that too).

Yes some people do, but I wouldn't take one if she was free. I want to spend every minute with my son. I didnt' have him for someone else to take care of.
