There's more than one way. Mijikai is "not Long". Hikui is "not tall" and a short distance can be either "shookyori" or "Tan kyori". Chibi actually means more like "little one" and is normally used in reference to children. For pronunciation just remember the Japanese language was converted to our alphabet by the Portugese so the I's are pronounced like our long E's. AI is pronounced like our long Ifollowed by our long E. E is pronounced like our long A. A is pronounced Ah and the R is sounded as though it were a D. The portugese R is a rolled DRR sound and they evidently used that as the closet sound they had. For example the "Tan kyori" used for short distance is pronounced Tahn key yo de. Mijikai is pronounced Me ge ki e.

'Chibi' could go, since it can mean 'runt', 'little' or 'short'. Although I think its a bit mocking, so you might not want to use it to a Japanese person in friendly speech.

"short" in Japanese is:
短い(mijikai) - antonym of long
背が低い(se ga hikui) - antonym of tall, mainly used for human being

ex.:
Life is short = 人生は短い
He is short = 彼は背が低い
life = 人生(jinsei)
he = 彼(kare)
