I was just curious how many US troops die/get wounded compared to how many civilians are still joining the military? I'm interested to see if maybe more people are joining to help fight for this country or if less people are joining do to the war? Are people joining the military quicker than they're geting wounded/killed in Iraq? Serious accurate answers only! thanks

The Army's recruiting goal for fiscal year 2007 was 80,000 people. Not sure what the death toll for this year was.

Granted there are criminal excesses being committed by Americans in Iraq. Granted that the United States has slipped into the hands of neofascist corporatists, and the public as a rule are totally ignorant of the truth. Granted that FOX news are blatant propagandists who lie like Goebbels. Does any of the above excuse what the Iraqis are doing to each other? They had a chance to build a new nation, and are instead killing each other almost as fast as they breed. I am with Mercutio: a pox on both your houses! The entire mess has been created by fundamentalist Islamics and fundamentalist corporatists, while the latter have used the paltry 9/11 controversy to embark on a crusade against public ownership. Just as the British overthrew the Iranian government and instituted the Shah so their oil companies could access the publicly owned oil fields, so has the United States invaded Iraq. If Canada nationalized their oil, George W. Bush would find terrorists in Grand Prairie. So the Republicans are insane. The world knows that. The Islamics are insane, too, so all we can do is hope the two sides can kill each other off without too many of the rest of us learning the true meaning of collateral damage.

A lot more are joining then get killed or wounded in Iraq and Afganistan. All branches have been meeting their requirements for enlistment. That means that not only are we covering the reletively small number of casualties, but also the authorized growth of the military by the Congress, plus retirements and those that leave at the end of thier enlistments.

Over twice the number of killed and wounded through the entire war join in one year for just the Army alone.

The Military recruiting goals far exceed the rate of combat wounded or killed. For a country that is so dead set against the war most services have meet or exceeded there recruiting goals for the entire duration of the war. Yes it has been close a couple of time but we still seam to get what we need. The army retention numbers have been steady also so people are not getting out in mass as some of the Liberals would like you to think. In the US army alone in the last 4 years we have lost 2683 warriors in the US we have lost 16,000 civilians due to murder in 2006 alone. So you tell me which is worse to die as a hero in a combat zone where you know people are trying to kill you or to die out side a “Quick E Mart” because Joe wanabe Thug thinks you can identify him for the hold up he just done

Operation Iraqi Freedom- 3,665 KIA---27,729 WIA

Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) - 418 KIA
1,472 WIA

MIA-in all theaters of operation-4 - all Army

Total KIA-4083
WIA-29,201
MIA-4

Total casualties:33,284 (does not include MIAs)

OIF KIA average per year-814.4
OEF-KIA average per year-69.7

OIF- an average of 2.2 KIA per day
OEF-an average of .19 KIA per day

Unfortunately, I do not know the total number to troops available. Difficult to assess because of number of deployments.

Figures courtesty of the August 20, 2007, issue of "Marine Corps TImes."

WW2-Battle of Peleliu- KIA (Marines only in 7 days)-1050 (an uncessary battle)
Tarawa-KIA-871 (Marines only in 76 hours)
Okinaw-KIA-3815 (Marines only)

This represents only three battles the Marines fought in, over a much shorter period of time. These are statistics offered by the DOD. Do what you want with them.

I don't know why people join the military. I joined the Marine Corps because i came from a Marine Corps family. I also soon learned that the American military really doesn't think about fighting for their country, but for the Corps and their buddies.

40,000 +/- are killed every year on our highways. I guess we should abolish automobiles. We are at war, right or wrong, and so we must fight to the best of our abilities and hope to keep casualties down as much as possible. Any loss of any life under any conditons are tragic. But that seems how the world operates.

Also take into consideration that many in the military never see combat action because they are cooks, mail clerks, maintenance people, etc. I do not know how may of our troops are actually involved or assigned to combat duty.

I didn't mean to carry on so, but the reality of casualties in this war needs to be looked at realistically.

Thank you for your patience....

Semper Fi and God bless the greatest country in the world. And I have been to some others.

There has been a monthly average of 160,000 US troops in the Iraqi theatre of operations during the last 22 months, and a total of 2,112 deaths.

That gives a monthly death rate of 75 per 100,000 soldiers in ALL of Iraq. The entire nation. A nation about the size of California.

The firearm death rate in Washington D.C. is 80.6 per 100,000 persons for the same period. Consider too that Washington is about 80% 'green zone' so the murders are taking place in about 20% of the city. If it weren't for the safety of 80% of Washington diluting these figures, this figure would then be about five times higher.

Liberals have tried with no success to debunk these facts saying that they don't take into account the civilian deaths in Iraq, but then we're not talking about civilians in Iraq, we're talking Americans. AND, if they really cared about the civilians in Iraq they wouldn't be so keen to pull out and let them die in the power vacuum that would create.

Bottom line, military deaths in Iraq are VERY low. Both statistically speaking and in reality you really are safer in Iraq than you are in some parts of Washington, DC. That is a fact. What most are dealing with is simple impression.

considering that there are 1.5 million people in U.S. military and roughly 3700 people killed in iraq etc. that is less than 1/4 of 1%

That is a very ugly question-- does not deserve an answer. People die on both sides.. Joining is so simple -- how much of an American are you???
