I just graduated from culinary school with a major in baking and pastry arts. It takes two years to recieve an associates degree, but there are four year colleges in culinary arts out there - in which case you would recieve a Bachelors degree. I recommend getting a degree in business and management though, just graduating from culinary school isnt always enough to start your own business. It takes more than you may realize. And with the insane cost of culinary school nowadays, you need to be SURE your business will make it.

Regular college is not required. Your best bet is a program at a culinary school. The CCA in San Francisco, for example, has a 30-week pastry chef program. Some Community Colleges also have culinary programs including baking however you are less likely to learn secrets from masters that will allow you be make extra special product. Cost is about $15,000. You can then work for a bakery to learn the business. If you were to take other college classes, you might include basic bookkeeping and other small-business skills.

Be forewarned, its hard work for low pay at a bakery. The best money and most stress is in wedding cakes.
