M is for Model. The use of M goes back at least to the M1903 Springfield Rifle.

As we covered this last week it stands for Moder not military version but model. Like the M16A2 is the Model 16 rifle that the army evaluated and adopted and the A 2 would be the same model with an addition to the design. Like the M1A1 Abrams was the first model tested and additional design number 1 was added to it.

It stands for the Military/Model. They get their numbers by what order they are in the Series. IE, the M1 Abrams now has the M1A1, and the M1A2, and the M2 Bradley now has up to the M2A3 and M3A3.
Its the same for small arms. Before the M1 Garand, weapons took the number by the year of initial Manufacture, ie M1903 Springfield, or the M1911 Colt, or M1917 Enfield.
