Well..

"Texas" comes from "tejas" ( 'j' used to be 'x') which means "tiles". Not necessarily red, but since they're usually made of clay, they do take the reddish color this material has in some places.

"colorado" also refers to the color of the soil, it's one of the words for 'red' in Spanish.

So, if you put both states' names together, you'll get "red tiles".

Although Colorado does mean “of red color or red” in Spanish, it does not refer to a tile. I agree with Texas. The Spanish translation of the state name of Texas is Tejas. Tejas are also those thin, U-shaped, red-colored tiles commonly used in rooftops.

user SexRexRx is probably right. It would be texas which probably came from "tejas" which are red clay tiles on mexican roofs. Although it doesnt mean "red" tiles its just understood that they are usually red. "colorado" just means "reddish".

It isn't Texas.

Texas is not derived from spanish. It is derived from a native american word (not sure which tribe) meaning "friend".

"Texas"
"Mexican province, briefly an independent nation and now a U.S. state, from Sp. Texas, earlier pronounced "ta-shas," originally an ethnic name, from Caddo (eastern Texas Indian tribe) taysha "friends, allies." "

"Colorado"

"the U.S. state is named for the river, Sp. "Rio Colorado" "colored river"."
