Query: how many people do you see who "look like you been in prison for murder and piercings that leave huge holes in your ears and implants in your skins"? Is there reason to believe that many people exist here to answer this question? This isn't a dis, it's a real question, even though your question trails off with a rather more insulting implication.
I live in a very edgy area, and I can probably count the number of folks with more than the usual ear/nose/lip/eyebrow piercing on my hands - I might need my feet if I looked hard enough.
Too much of the question is subjective - "many tatts and piercings", the in prison for murder comment, and so on. I assume it's obvious that for some, a single earring or a small out-of-view tattoo is too much.
That said, even before I worked for the University of California, I was more concerned with how bright and technically skilled a person was. There is always a dearth of truly skilled engineers, even during the crash (plenty of so-so types). Between that how they are personally, as long as the tattoo work isn't obscene or offensive(*) it is just a secondary matter.
(*) "Obscene" and "offensive", although somewhat ambiguous, do have (limited & loose) legal definitions, and are therefore useful.

As far as tatts, none below your elbows. You can IF IT IS SMALL ENOUGH to fit under a watch, get a wrist band tattoo done. No tattoos on neck, either. Anywhere else is fine. Teachers always have to wear sleeves, especially women, which I am assuming you are. As far as piercings, you will just have to take them out while there. Not that hard as long as your tattoos are coverable, above shoulders and not on neck and you pull out your stuff whenever you are at work

Plenty. It's really easy to cover mods, even ear-holes. Go into a high-paying office, then take a close look. You'll be surprised. A smart company hires people that can do the job-- not unmodded people without minds of their own. As long as it's covered, employers don't care.
Times are changing for the better. Please don't make the tattooed people/ prison stereotype. It has never been right. I just saw picture of a cop covered in tattoos. That's a good job, and good pay.

Peaches Honey Blossom is only 1% right...
Actually, there's a lotta jobs one can get regardless of what they look like. There's quite a number of heavily tattooed chefs in fine restaurants, some build musical instruments, some are construction workers, cops, firefighters, automechanics .....etc....some work in retail at boutiques, some are makeup artists and fashion designers.....matter of fact a good amount of "these people" actually run their own buinesses.
Not to mention there are many people that have 9 to 5 office jobs that are pretty heavily tattooed.....you have no clue what hiding under that suit....

The good jobs are out there. Try to focus your job search on companies who pride themselves on edgy-ness and or diversity. Like not for profits that help ex gang members find jobs or and up and coming technology company that was founded by a 20 something. Also, Focus on behind the scenes positions where you wouldn't have to meet or be seen by customers or clients.

Those of us with Tattoos are not circus animals!
I have 25 tattoos and at least 6 of them are always visible and more depending on my attire. I am well educated and have several degrees in the Information Technology field. I work in a professional environment where I am accepted for who I am and I am able to proudly display my body art. So yes, there are employers that do hire "my type of people"!

I found a good job that let me have my tattoos and piercings. I know a lot of places make you cover them up. Hopefully one day, tattoos will be the norm in society and you'll be allowed to express yourself in and outside of the work place.

A lot of places don't mind. I have visable tattoos (one on the inside of my right forearm and a pair of sparrows on my collar bone) and I am a store manager for a successful cell phone company. Also jobs like hair stylist, bartender, exct. will work with almost anything.

Unless your job requires you to deal with the public directly - or your tats are OFFENSIVE (as in swastikas, nudity, etc) - then it is DISCRIMINATION if they don't hire someone...
If there is a "no jewelry" policy, then they will have to remove any noticable piercings - and most (non-neck/facial) tattoos CAN be covered up if they violate any HR policies ;););)

Well, I totally defend tattoos, but I do agree. If you're gonna get them all over, you'd better have thought this part of it through and be willing to accept that you may never have a really well-paying job because of your ink and be prepared to work in low-paying jobs the rest of your life. Unless, of course, you're Kat Von D and turned out to be the luckiest and hottest ink artist in the world! You go girl! Yeah, it's discrimination, but trust me, all the employer has to do is say you weren't qualified enough and that's the end of it. That's why I don't have any ink on my arms.
