I had a cavity filled about 5 hours ago. It was my first cavity. My tooth really hurts where they filled it. It stings and feels like it is throbing. Is this normal? How long does it take to go away?

It is normal for your tooth to be sensitive for a few days after having a cavity filled. If the pain does not go away and it gets worse or if it starts becoming sensitive to hot and cold, if it keeps you awake or wakes you up at night then you will know that you are going to need a root canal because the filling was too deep and it is setting too close to your nerve. It should be fine in a few days and everything will feel normal again.

yes it is normal, the deeper the filling, the more the tooth will hurt later, take some tylenol, put ice on the affected cheek, the throbbing will pass in a day or two at most.

It may be a little sensitive, but from my experience it should be throbbing or very painful. Try taking some ibuprofen and see how you feel in a little while.
