I recently quit drinking three monthes ago. I was drinking heavy almost everynight. For over a year straight. I never really felt like I had to have it. It was just always there. I feel tons better and I am getting much more healthy now. My question is that this past week I actually thought about drinking and I kind of craved it. Does this make me an alcoholic?? I didn't get anything to drink and I have only thought this a few times. But it always makes me feel kind of guilty. Would having a few drinks once in a while be o.k? only if in moderation of course.
I'm only 24 so it's not like I want to just never drink again....

No, it doesn't make you an alcoholic. A craving really doesn't mean much in the scheme of things.... just like a craving for sugar, salt, or certain foods. Your mind is just desiring something from that craving... maybe your subconscious wants to spend time with your friends.

Having a few drinks once in a while is perfectly fine... just remember moderation (which it sounds like you will). Sometimes, it's beneficial to have a LITTLE to drink (like a glass of red wine, for example).

If you are still struggling with this, you may want to talk it out with a counselor or someone you know and trust that won't be judgmental or biased in any way (which is hard to find, so a counselor is usually a better way to go).

Well, I can't tell you who you are, you have to look at the real reason as to why you quit in the first place. I myself have been sober for over a year.( I unfortunately know too meany alcoholic,) And very once in awhile I crave a drink, kinda like a craving for a good cheese burger or something, not a craving to be drunk. If this is the type of crave you are experiencing, and you truly can control you drinking, then I don't see a problem in having a few the odd time. But only you should be the one to decide.
Good Luck

Hey girl,
Dont feel guilty for wanting to have a drink or two. Sometimes during a busy work week i cant wait to go home and unwind with a glas of wine or a cold beer. We actually have work meetings in the afternoon at a retaurant and our boss serves us beer! You may be craving it because your a little stressed and it calms you. A problem may result when you feel its the ONLY way to calm you. I wouldnt stress over, your 24 years old and i am about the same age. I dont think there is anything wrong. I hope this helps!

A person is not an alcoholic because they drink too much. A person is an alcoholic because they have a chemical dependency, usually brought on by other factors such as low self esteem, lousy job/boss, too much idle time. If you drank heavily for a year, that would indicate a dependency problem, so it would prob be a good idea for you to seek some counseling. And it prob. would be best for you not to drink again at least in the short term.

If you can manage to drink only a couple of times a week, OR drink only a couple of drinks when you do drink, then there's nothing wrong with that and you are not an alcoholic - whether you crave it or not.
However, if you start to drink with the intent to only have a couple and then continue to drink without being able to, it's a pretty sure sign that you are an alcoholic.

good luck.

Congratulation for you !! you are very strong Angel. There are people who can manage just a drink when the moderation is there , but others no. Alcohol is not good for heath, its expensive and give head dick the day after. i can't say if its good or not when you drink only in the right moderation. to make your choice do or not. you can contact AA , just go and listen to the story's from people who stopped drinking alcohol. this will help you to make your choice.
you are brave .

I also had heavy drinking habits when I was younger. just go have a few with your friends, it won't hurt you. As long as you can limit yourself to a few in a social setting, you are ok.
