America is the only country that circumcises young boys for non-religious reasons. The circumcision rate is huge compared to the rest of the world. Jewish and Muslim people do it for religious reasons, but not all of America is Jewish and Muslim. Why does America practice this so much and practice it for non-religious reasons?

As you can see by most of the previous answers, the reason Americans mutilate the genitals of their newborns is ignorance .

An intact penis is no less hygenic than an intact labia.

People are sheep around here.

The old reason was scripture.

Then it became for health reasons.

Now it is habit.

We are slowly moving away from circumcision as a populace. Especially since clean water and high hygiene standards are so common in the US (for now). When the water starts to fail more that might change.

Today they are finding that you can have an un-cut penis and remain hygienic. Keep your kid clean and teach him good bathing habits. That does not mean that being un-cut does not come with problems. I could tell you quite a few stories of men who underwent circumcision later in life for medical reasons..They weren't thanking mum then, I can tell you that!

I think for the most part if has become an aesthetic practice in America.
In our physical minded world: Un-cut is ugly...
Hey, if there was a way to trim a vagina to make it look better I'm sure we'd do that too...

You can't miss something you never had. If you had a circumcision as an infant you only miss it in your mind..Your body doesn't know the difference. Men that whine that their sexual hang-ups are related to their penis are fooling themselves. Focus on being a better lover in the head with your brain....

There is an entire movement that is against circumcision...
Hey, if you don't want to circumcise your baby..fine..but leave other parents alone!
This is just one more excuse to turn people against each other for a difference of opinion and lifestyle...

The only reason I can think of is that in the old days most doctors or hospital administrators were Jews. The tradition is now well established. The doctors and hospitals get more money. Why not?

I refused to have my son circumcised. The father can say no.

Because in Colonial times, people in the Christian religious communities in Massachusetts used to collect smegma, and sell it to the other colonies as goat cheese. It was considered a great delicacy... until others caught on, and demanded (under threat of war) that all males be circumcised, in order to prevent this from happening again. Since then, it sort of stuck, as a custom.

If you teach your son to lift the skin and scrub his penis and keep it clean he is not going to have the smell from that waxy buildup and he will be no more unclean or unhealthy than any other boy. People in the US do it because they are terrified of the day when their son drops his pants in the locker room or in front of a girl for the first time that he will look different, and goodness knows different is bad here. So better to snip now than possibly be embarrassed later.

They say its for hygene reasons... I think its for pizza toppings.

One guy in Kansas, I hear, was born with his left eyelid all deformed. The doctors replaced the deformed skin with the boy's foreskin... the surgery was a smashing success, but the boy ended up a little ********.

It is for hygenic reasons. A male who has not been circumcised will have trouble keeping that area of his body clean and can contribute to his sexual partners getting various types of cervical diseases.

Originally Americans did it for health reasons. Today however we take baths on the daily basis. I think it's mostly a cultural things today. The reasoning; Americans don't want their son to be the only one in the locker room with foreskin.

Many circumcise for health and personal hygiene reasons. The penis is easier to keep clean and free from infection without the foreskin. It is also in keeping with what is more socially acceptable. In western society it is just more common to see a circumcised man.
