I am having one wisdom tooth pulled sometime in the next couple of weeks. It is an upper tooth. (I am 35 years old.)The tooth is not impacted. It is broken and has decay. I will be awake during the procedure, with just novocaine to numb the area. The oral surgeon and his assistant said I will not feel pain but I will feel up to about 20 pounds of pressure. This sounds extremely scary to me. Also, he gave me a prescription for Halcion, which he wants me to take before the extraction. I am also nervous about that, as I am very senstitive to medication, but he said all it will do is relax me and that it will also relax my jaw which will make it easier and faster for him to extract the tooth. I want it to be as easy and fast as possible so I am planning on taking the Halcion before my appointment. Has anyone had any experience? I am curious about reactions to Halcion and what to expect to feel when I take it, and about the pain and/or pressure I may feel during the extraction. Thanks!

The dentist I work for offers this to our patients if they want it. It is an anti-anxitey drug that will affect each person different. Many patients that come into our office usually do not even remember getting the procedure done. If you do take this drug be prepared to have someone drive you & pick you up. You will be very wobbly like if you have taken a few drinks. You will most likely sleep it off for the rest of the day. The usual prscription is to take 2 pills ( 0.25 mg) 1 hour prior to dental appt. And eat a nice large breakfast to keep you from vomiting since its a strong pill.

If I were you I would ask to be put under. I just had 4 removed. It's a very unpleasant experience to be awake during a wisdom tooth extraction, even if you have a "relaxer." But if that's the only way, I would definitely take it. Trust the oral surgeon.

I just had 10 teeth pulled Friday in preparation for full dentures. I was not put to sleep however they gave me a series of pills that morning that made me very drowsy. I was aware that something was being done but did not feel anything. I did have to have someone drive me home afterwards. I am the biggest chicken there is when it comes to going to the dentist and this was not as bad as I thought it would be. I go back in a month for the rest of them to be pulled and knowing that they are going to give me the meds I am ok with it. I really don't remember anything that happened.

Your dentist is trained to know what drugs and when they can be used. He also studies the latest methods as required by the Dental Association and your state licensing body, just as physicians are required to do. Trust him.
Stop worrying. Relax. That is the best way to prepare for this.

I once had a skin graft to enhance my receeding gums. To do this, they take the skin from the roof of your mouth. The dentist gave me a halcion beforehand to calm my nerves. It made me very relaxed, and the procedure went smoothly. I highly recommend the halcion. If you get a prescription, it also works as a killer sleeping pill.

Can you just be put to sleep?? I would opt for that instead of being awake...I get mine out in 2 weeks (6 teeth!!) and I am getting knocked out! I would feel weird being awake and doped up.
