oblivion of this awareness and being absorbed into the universe.
the valkyries take only those who died in battle... usually young people. i'd rather have a long full and healthy life here before worrying about any promise of afterlife.

I'm an atheist so I have the idea of nothing which appeals to me because any conscious afterlife would be missing vital parts of this life. I want this life to be the only life I lead, I like it that every single second counts and that I don't know when it's going to be snuffed out.
Saying that, the universe is way beyond what my mind can comprehend and there is no sure answer but I think that eternal nothingness is a rather fitting end.

Make the most of this one is the best advice. Otherwise when you die you keep thinking about the "Beforelife".
Pascal's wager is a good answer too - act ethically and skilfully in this life and enjoy the trust, pleasure and friendship that are the consequences of your actions. (mind you don't just trust anyone who wants to be your friend though especially if you're rich). If there is no afterlife at all then at least you've had a good "Presentlife".
If there is an afterlife you'll enjoy that too - whatever it is.

Why the hell would you want 72 virgins? Sit and listen to a group of young girls for about twenty minuets, imagine that for all eternity.
I think that I will go back to what I remember from before I was born. Exquisite oblivion.
