We are considering returning to the Bay Area late Saturday to avoid northbound Sunday traffic. Does anyone have experience traveling the Grapevine on Sunday going north. We are guessing Highway 5 in California will be crowded all day Sunday.

Try to leave earlier in the day. On sunday afternoons, the 405 Freeway going north gets super crowded by 12:00pm when it connects to the 5 Freeway North. The grapevine area doesn't actually get too crowded until midafternoon, around 3pm. Avoid the 405 freeway if you can and try to get on 5 North if you can.

I've gone from Disneyland to Sac many times and unless there is a fire or accident the weekends, excluding the end of a holiday weekend are the best time to travel. I always hit some traffic through LA but the weekends it is much better, going over the Grapevine isnt bad. There will be cars and trucks on the road but it usually isnt stop and go, just moderate but lighter than a weekday. But I have seen fires on the GV and this can stop traffic, sometimes for hours but this can happen any time. Sunday is my day of choice to leave LA except on a holiday weekend then Saturday. The Sunday after THanksgiving is the worse, you will have stop and go from LA to SAC.

Sunday is good but leave early. Getting to the Grapevine can be slow in the late afternoon to early evening.

The Grapevine should be a smooth fast drive on a Sunday.
