Each course has a specific credit "value". These used to be (and sometimes, still are) based on the number of hours you spend in that class each week. For example, a three credit hour class might meet three times per week for an hour each time. Often, the school will "embed" the credit hours in the course number, so a course number 324, might be a junior-level (3) course worth 4 credit hours. Each school is different, so you need to find out how your school numbers their courses.

As long as you pass the class (generally, "C" or better), you get the full number of credits. If you fail ("D" or "F"), you get no credits and have to repeat the course during another semester (assuming it is required in your degree plan). So really, the credits are all or nothing, pass/fail. Just remember, the GRADE you get in the course is used to determine your GPA, so do your best and don't slack off just to get a high enough grade to get the credit hours.

In NC (where I'm at) a credit or credit hour is exactly what it says it is. For example, let's say you have to take Calculus I. Your class meets twice a week for an hour and a half each meeting. You will get 3 credits for this class. Credits are based on the total amount of time spent in and out of class for a class. The lower the credit (ie: Physical Education=1 credit) the less time you have spent working for the class. Hope this has helped some!

Credit is the measure of your progress to your degree. Colleges offer classes consisting 1 to 5 credits depending on different class and college. You get your credit if you pass the class. If you get a B or an A that determines your GPA. Which is like an average in high school term. A is in the 90's, B in the 80's C in the 70's, so on and so forth.
If you fail a class you get zero credit and in order to receive cresit for that class you have to retake the class and pass it.

Credits are like points and grades just make your credits worth more you don't get more credits. The more classes you take the more credits you get. You don't get the credits in a class if you fail I think D's do count as failing also. Some teachers do pass and fail not grades. All you need to do then is just to pass and no need to worry on the grades. Just pass.

All the classes listed by your college/university will list the number of credits you can earn by taking them. You will earn those credits as long as you pass the course (passing grades will vary by school).

You grade point average is calculated by using the number of credit hours taken and figuring in the quality points you get depending on the grade you got in the course. That is how the grade figures in, but the credit hours do not change.
