Weddings in Bible times were not just an afternoon event. They could go into several days, and wine was a symbol of God's blessing. The best wine was always served first, with the quality going down as the party went on.
At this particular wedding party, the host ran out of wine before the party ended, and therefore there was a problem. Jesus then took water and turned it into the best wine that the party guests had during the duration of the party. And everyone enjoyed.

It was the first miracle Jesus performed while on Earth. He found his friends at the wedding party in a terrible delimma, and to both show His compasion, as well as give initial proof as to His divinity, He changed the water in the jugs into wine. He proceeded to perform many more miracles while on Earth, but always in such a manner as to give evidence to His Godliness and to benefit those whom He came to serve.
