Take it to a vet

You have a lot of options and it depends on what you want to do.

You can call animal control, and if animal control is connected with a Humane Society, the cat might get adopted, but more likely it will be put down.

If you are serious about helping this cat but can't keep it - try calling all the local humane societies and animal rescue groups. Make sure you ask what makes an animal adoptable, and what would they do if he's not adoptable. www.petfinder.com has a good list. If all the shelters are full, offer to foster the cat until space is open. This should mean that the Humane Society will pay for the vet costs, food, litter, etc- but this will depend on the rescue group.

If you decide to keep the cat - if you can't catch the cat, borrow or buy a livetrap. As soon as you catch the cat, take it to the vet, ASAP- even before bringing it inside. The vet will do tests for FIV, fleas, give shots, - and maybe fix the cat if the cat is healthy enough. Then you have a cat.

If the cat is feral (wild) - check out www.thecatsite.com/forums and then the rescue/feral cat thread. Lots of good information.

Also remember, that for the cat to legally be yours, you have to usually make an effort to find the lost owners. The requirements change from state to state.

Poor little thing! Its coming to you because it trusts you and knows you'll feed it. Its probably gone now but the next time it shows up, lock it in your house! I know others will say thats cruel if its an outdoor cat or a feral cat or because it might belong to someone else but, whoever it belongs to is neglecting it, big time! If its a feral / outdoor cat, it won't mind being locked in as long as its not being abused and you would never do that. When you've got it indoors, first things first, flea treatment! To get what i'm about to suggest you will need to take it to the vet, if you're on benefits you can go to the RSPCA. They'll charge around a fiver for the consultation and £12.00 for the flea treatment. Its called Advantage and comes in little tubes ( 4 per pack ). You squeeze one tube between its shoulders, that will cover it for 6/8 weeks. You can get a can of flea spray called StayKill for £12.00 which will protect your carpets and soft furnishings and don't forget the worming tablets! Just give it one tablet for now and follow the instructions on the pack. Don't overfeed the poor little mite for the first few days, his/her stomach wont be able to take it. Gradually increase its food until its having four to five small meals a day and is gaining weight. Leave a litter tray or newspaper down for its toilet needs too. Once its gained weight and you are happy that its well nourished and healthy then open your door and offer it a way out. Chances are it'll disappear for a few hours but it will be back, cats never forget a person who is kind and loving, it is after all the way it found you in the first place! Good luck.

Pet stores sell a type of vitamin paste. This is different then a lot of food that you can get in the fact it is chalked full of nutrients and protien that this kitty apparently desperately needs. This type of supplament usually comes in a tube and is in paste form. It can be used in addition to other food that you may give him and will help him recover faster.

When you feed him give him small amounts. Starved cats tend to eat fast then throw up because they make themselves sick. Keep small amounts of food in his bowl and then refilli t every half-an-hour. I know you will probably want to give him as much as possible but keep in mind that kitty doesn't need to be sick and he needs to get as much as possible from his food.

Stay away from wet food for a while. Wet food is very rich and for kitties that are food deprived it may be too rich for their systems. Again it can make them sick to their stomachs and won't help their situation.

Stick with dry food and the vitamin paste. The vitamin paste should come with instructions on how much you can give in a day. Give this seperate from the dry food. Most cats like the way it tastes and view it as a special treat.

If this cat belongs to someone you know, confront them about it. Take pictures of the cat while you have it as proof to how starved the cat is when you got it. You can decide whether you want to keep the cat as yours or to call the humane society. If the owner demands it back call the humane society and they will come and help you and tell you who to contact. Then, you can also chose to adopt the kitty once the humane society rescues it.

Contact your local branch of Cats Protection and ask their advice. If you are planning to keep the cat, then try to get it to eat and drink. Little and often is the ideal. Then, if you can entice him into a carrier, get him to your vet and explain the situation.

If you are not planning to adopt the cat, then feed the poor thing and ask CP if they have space to take it in.

Canned tuna packed in WATER, not oil. That'll tempt any cat to eat and it is healthy for him -- though not nutritionally complete as the sole diet. Be careful not to get tuna packed in oil -- you'll give him diarrhea, and if he's as thin as you say that could kill him.

Feed him, feed him, feed him! If you're feeding him tuna, he will probably quickly allow you to catch him. Then take him to the vet for further care. Either adopt him, rehome him, or take him to a shelter beyond that point.

it's probably just stressed out having to be in a new environment and everything. take it to the vet and see if he reccommends anything. have it in a carrier or bed that it's familiar with and try tempting it with toys and food and water. but since what you have is a totally starved cat you have to take it to the vet first

feed it same place, twice a day all it wants, same location

it will get well and it's not a major cost

put a found cat ad in but don't expect any reponses

does it have a collar with contact details?

also you have to be careful as if it comes back and you start feeding it, you will become its adoptive family lol and it will keep returning.

this happened with one of our cats, we found other cats were eating her food put out (shes outdoor cat and wont eat indoors) one of our neightbours down the road was feeding her regulary and phoned to ask if it was ours. I had to go round and coax her to me then drag her back to ours and feed her again and make sure she was the one eating the food. worked a treat

Can you adopt him? Perhaps at least sponsor him a trip to the vet?
If you feed him, give him wet cat food or dry kibble. Avoid human food if possible, although they do like milk...

good luck

I would feed it and hope to gain its trust eventually, and at that stage have it neutered and let it join the family.

I have a soft spot for cats
