After a meal, food in the GI Tract must be digested. There is an increase in blood flow diverted to the active areas (Stomach and intestines) to help move food along the GI tract and digest the food to smaller absorbable components. There is an expenditure of energy needed for this process to occur.
The less active areas at the time---the brain ---gets a slightly less amount of blood flow causing a person to feel more drowsy and sleepy. Hence the urge to sleep after a heavy meal. Hope that helped,

Hello,

Feeling SLEEPY is what some people experience after eating a heavy meal.

Especially at lunchtime or at midday.

That is why in Mexico, they have what is called a 'SIESTA Break."

And that is from 3.00pm to 4.00pm.

This period allows for a nap after the midday meal.

Especially if you eat poultry. The triptophane in it causes you to get sleepy... I forget why at this moment... But yes, we get sleepy when we eat a lot because our body exhorts all the energy to the digestive system. Try taking Digestive enzymes right after eating. It helps me... You can get them at any healthfood store

Because all your energy is going to your stomach to digest your food.
