It IS expanding. We don't know WHY but it IS.

Until a few years ago, it was a definite question as to whether the universe would at some point re-collapse, and head for a "big crunch", or whether it would continue expanding (space and matter having the equivalent of "escape velocity") leading to a "heat death" of the universe as it spread the same energy over a larger and larger volume.
New measurements showing the most distant observable objects *accelerating* away seems to have settled the issue in favour of the second option in an unexpected way.
More research on "dark energy " and "dark matter" is in hand!
(But why is this a R&S question?)

The universe is not only expanding but the expansion is accelerating. This has only recently been learned and we still don't understand why the expansion is accelerating.
