The girl is clearly a shop assistant. Behind the till means behind the cash register, i.e. the machine into which you enter the amount to be paid, put in the money and take out the change.

Behind the till literally implies you works as a check-out girl. The till is the things you put all the money that people give to the girl. Behind the till means she sits there taking payments from the shoppers.
