I'm hoping to get input from actual tattoo artists as well, but any input would be helpful from anyone who has had the tops of their feet tattooed. I want something, not quite sure what yet, but want to know, in comparison with other body areas, such as back or stomach, how painful is having the feet done and also, what risks are there, i.e., rubbing off because of shoes, not healing well, etc.

EDIT: Cool! This helped a lot! I've read so many things where people have said tops of feet hurt like hell and it was sort of turning me off to the idea. I have ink other places and I tolerated them just fine, so, hearing y'all say it was no big deal has convinced me. The fading from the sun won't be a big deal cuz I don't go out in it much, but the shoe part will be the worst problem as I work in an office. Bummer...

I have a tattoo on the top that kind of goes down the side. I didn't think it hurt very much at all. Had to wear flip flops for about a week so it wouldn't rub, but other than that it healed nicely, and looks awesome. I love it, and don't regret having it done there at all!

If you want a tattoo bad enough you shouldn't be worried about pain. But I have several and compared to my lower back and shoulder... my foot was fairly easy. I have a tattoo of my and my husband zodiac sign connected with tiny stars around it. It healed better than all of my tattoos and I have not had any trouble with the ink lifting. I did have to get a touch up after it healed... but you have to do that alot of times with tattoos no matter where they are. Hope this helps!

i have the tops of both of my feet tattooed and they were by far the MOST painful tattoos i have ever had. i would rate it as a constant 7 on a scale from 1 to 10.
also please know that you should not wear any socks or shoes for a full two weeks to allow for healing. many people rush out and get their feet tattooed without knowing how they heal. feet take longer to heal and can be messed up when not cared for properly.

Go with along the top. Foot tattoos are hard enough to heal, and the sides usually fade and need to be touched up quite a bit from rubbing on your shoe. The top will be the same, but it's easier to find shoes that have no tops for healing times.

It Hurts! my whole leg is tattoed, but when it came to the tops of my feet, super delicate. Healing was fine, I lived in hawaii at the time so I wore flip flops or sandals everyday. I would say just keep it clean, and if you where regular shoes/boots to work, take them off whenever you get a chance to let it breathe.

My best friend has a frog tatooed on the top of her foot, she's had it about 8 years and no amount of shoe wearing has rubbed it off. She says it hurt like hell, I imagine because of all the nerves in your feet, and the fact that it's mostly bone. The fattier the area, the less it will hurt.

it's gonna hurt because your feet have a lot of bones. healing time should be the same as any other tattoo. only thing about feet tattoos is that they tend to fade faster than tattoos elsewhere on the body.
