I have to agree with squirrelnow, I think it is philosophy.

But I will go the extra mile, technology is not just making us buy things we don't need. it is telling us HOW to think, WHAT to expect, and WHAT to do. it has enslaved us. We are drones who have been brainwashed by the entertainment industry, commercials, and news into thinking that working overtime, all the commuting, and commercialization is a good thing for society, despite how ill adversely it is affecting our planet.

It also enslaves us to our government and the powerful corporations.we have been being spied on before the Patriot Act made it legal, we have our buying records for sale between businesses, everything we do is surveillance, thanks to technology.
Now we are getting national I.D. cards in May, 2008. I am very suspicious about these cards.

I like how you said that "living used to be alot closer to free and was more like a right", living isn't as free anymore, in fact it is only getting more expensive. Car insurance, health insurance, dental insurance, income taxes, inflation, it is a struggle for many just to keep food on the table...thank empathy for the salvation army. Only reason I didn't starve growing up, but I was still always hungry.

It is true that technology has increased life span, but it takes more than technology for the human life expectancy rate to lengthen.

All the industrialism is wreaking havoc on the ecosystem, we were never meant to over populate the planet as we have. Before nature controlled population with disease, this is evident in animal populations, but now we have found a way around population control and are marching towards self destruct. We are paying dearly for technology advances/globalization and I fear that in the future it will become more prevalent.

The bad thing is that we can never go back nor return. But we still have the freedom to buy land, build a log home and plant food in a garden. At night we can watch the fireflies out in the field and listen to the frogs croak as the sun goes down. Yes, we still can sit by the warm fire in the winter time and wake up to a beautiful snowfall that night before and as awaken, I smell the fresh aroma of coffee and the sound of sizzling bacon and the hot biscuits in the oven and I look around and there you are, your warm smile in a white t-shirt...Hey wait a minute we're talking about being enslaved to technology? Okay, let's throw out the tv..Who needs it anyway??

Both. Technology advances and enslaves us.

Example - Today people eat better than ever. No Pharoah or Ceasar ever had the variety of food that exists in the modern grocery store. The downside is that we can't feed out population without factory farms, roads and trucks and refigeration and lots and lots of petroleum to make it all go. We're hooked on technology, without it we don't eat.

Before we began the "technological revolution" people's lives were very poor in comparison to how people live today. The average lifespan for a male in the U.S. was about 46 years of age.

As we progressed technologically, the average life span has nearly doubled, and people live better than any time in history.

Environmental issues are addressed as we progress. You can't make such a blanket statement like you do, when in fact these issues are indeed tackled as we progress.

We don't suffer from lead poisoning as people have for over 2000 plus years, for example.

We have been given dominion over the earth. Of all Gods creatures we have the capacity to think and dominate. It is our burden to bare weather to use advancements for good or destructive purpose. The technology does not enslave man but mans use of technology enslaves his behavior. Humans have the ultimate responsibility or blame for what they do on this earth. Let us follow in the righteous paths and forgo the evil. You are all my brothers and sisters and are equally deserving of love and kindness. I hope that my use of technology has enriched your being to know that we are all Gods favorite children and that He has given us the power of reasoning and choice.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

we are programmed in this time to think that religion is true... you asked if technology has advanced us or enslaved us... Religions have enslaved us... democracy hasn't been able to bring about free speech has it... Looking at current American conditions, free speech is getting a kick in the teeth while the right to bare arms is getting all the support... at this rate the only rights they will have is to shoot each other... Which is where religions keeps bringing us... Look back at the explosion of the music industry how hard the catholic and Christian fringes worked to quiet it... when songs like John Lennon's Imagine is demonized we should all be concerned... What technology has delivered us is the Internet, where it is harder for the religions to sensor, they did it to radio, they did it to TV... We must take the opportunity to move beyond religious thinking before they find a way to
censor this medium of free speech and expression.

Most technology doesn't destroy anything. You're making a generalization beased on a few industries, for the most part petroleum based. I think higher technology gives us more freedom to think and explore. Look at subsistance farmers in South America or Africa: they live from day to day,a never-ending struggle for survival. You don't end up having deep philosophical thoughts that way.

*sigh* wow, one extreme to another. Does ANYONE here actually live in reality? 1. I have not enslaved any animals to do work for me that I don't do for myself. 2. I don't stick any animals in cages... and the meat I do buy from the stores are FREE RANGE animals (and in case you didn't know, most states have laws against keeping animals in crowded areas... a lot of that BS was done away with before I was even born) 3. and when I do kill to eat, that animal does not suffer. One shot to the head, it's done... And I've never stated I was superior.... I'm sure the lion isn't really thinking "I'm superior to the gazelle cause I kill it for food". Why is it bad for us to eat meat, but no one says anything about other animals doing it? Like bears? They can survive just fine on fruits and veggies.... why aren't you out in the woods showing them that they can survive just fine without meat? Or how about you tell the different insect colonies to not take advantage of the "workers" like they do? Seeing as that causes them suffering and pain since they are never allowed to mate/have children, etc... I'm sure they would appreciate your superior mind jumpin in there and saving them from all that work. If you can be this nutty with this question, then I can be this nutty with my answer.

At the heart of your question....technology has done both advanced and enslaved....

We no longer have to go down to the river to wash our clothes...we can throw a load in, and it can wash while we are watching t.v.....same with dishwashers....we can now drive from point a to point b, very quickly, fly across the country, etc...so, yeah it has advanced our lives...and in many ways made our "chores" more simple. However, with such things as the cell phone...it has enslaved us...we can never truly "get-away"...even on vacation, many will check e-mails, take their cell, and work while on vacation...we are never truly "free" from the world.
