what are the chances of my mom being a survivor of thyroid cancer?

Thyroid cancer is slow growing so that is in her favor. If it has not spread outside the thyroid, she should have a good chance after the thyroid and parathyroid glands are removed. Make sure that she has a good surgeon because the larynx ("voice box")is in the path of the cutting and she would not want that wiped out. Once that is done, she will be on thyroid tablets for the rest of her life but that is a minor thing by comparison. She will also be able to show off her new "necklace" (the surgery scar).

Your mom's chances are very good (85% survival rate). The problems will be dependant on several factors:1) has the cancer spread 2) what type of thyroid cancer is it (amongst other factors of course).
Sadly, my wife was not so fortunate. her cancer was a variant and did spread to many parts of her body including her brain. She died this past September.

actually they are all very competent in their context and content...just had my thyroid out...waiting on the tissue biopsy results. I'm a 41 yr old male so it was pretty uncommon for me to have this cancer so Dr opted to just remove the whole thing.
i think it may be in part to where i was raised, it was a EPA superfund site.

It depends on :
1 - Tumor pathology
2 - Your mom's age
3 - Tumor stage (T/N/M : tumor size / local invasion & . . . )
4 - Tumor grade
5 - Any concomitant illness
6 - etc.
