Chow in Basic was great. The Mess Sargent did not allow crap in his kitchen.
In AIT we once had meatloaf that was a loaf of bread with a little meat around the outside. The BN CO ate in there that day. Someone got arrested for stealing meat a week later.
I asked why the burgers smelled funny and was told it was horse meat. The guy said it was legal for human consumption in GA
In Germany they made Patty Melts in the morning and kept them hot for lunch. I put one next to a bunch of ants, they didn't what the crap either.
The best was in the Reserves. All the cooks were Muni bus driver in SF. Never knew bus drivers could cook so good.

I was in the Army in 1965, Fort Jackson, SC. The cooks used to make coffee by filling a 20 gallon drum with water then throwing a few pounds of coffee into the hot water. If you wanted coffee, you had to dip a cup in the mix and hopefully get mostly liquid.

The #4 MRE is the absolute worst MRE ever! It is the cheese omelet. Beware.
I've had more than my fair share of MREs. Once, I got the #4 MRE and one of the sergeants nearby noticed and insisted that I exchange it. Apparently, I wasn't the only one who knew the horrors of the #4.

the food in Basic was pretty damn good in Ft Jackson...lol
Have to say that other than MRE's makin me gag, after months of them straight....
That the worst food in an Army Chow hall.. I've had was in Korea, and it didn't matter what camp- They used powdered milk, and all the meat tasted strange...everything there had an odd smell and taste. I lost 25 pounds my first 3months in country because I cudn't eat anything but Rice and popcorn.. lol

I've been in for over seven years and I know that they discontinued this from the MRE selection but it was the beef frankfurters. We called them the 5 fingers of death. Every time we are them we would be farting like crazy and running to the latrines. They smelled like cat food and tasted like a mixture of Vienna sausages and turd. I'm just glad they got rid of them! Although I really do like the MRE #20 or spaghetti with meat sauce because it kinda taster like a chef boardee meal and doesn't smell like @$$! They aren't all bad but I wouldn't feed them to my kids.

All forms of the MRE. Those things are not fit for human consumption, and I firmly believe that people who actually claim to LIKE them are either some kind of creepy masochists, or people born with iron stomachs. They taste awful, back you up something fierce (in terms of bowels), and the smell of the MRE heating element alone made me nauseous. Hell, the memory of it makes me nauseous. The fact that starving Iraqis will usually turn their noses up at them should clue you in...

MRE's(Meals Ready to eat) where the worst meals I ate. The chow hall food is rather tasty in the military. They have the same foods your mother would cook. Hamburgers, chicken, ribs, salads, etc. But in BTC you are only allowed to eat certain things. You will not be allowed to eat the tasty desserts.

The chow in basic wasn't all that bad because I was always hungry. But the ham and lima bean C rations in Vietnam make me want to puke just typing this.
