I do have a son and a daughter. I am teaching them self-value, and to use their brains. Never judge, and give respect where it is deserved.

I would teach them to leave society, to live without cash, material wealth. To have land in the hills or deep country with a strawbale home, rain cistern gray water system and a paddle wheel or wind mill for electric. To live off the land using a garden, chickens and occasional wild turkey or deer. To have horses as transportation and as companionship as a pet.

I say this being a 38 yr old male who see's what is coming, see's the destruction, worthless rat race after cash, wealth and material items. I've lived that world already. Now I am going to do what I mentioned above.

Then my life will be stress free, healthy, poison and chemical free, no time line to deal with and best of all, it will be more adventerous and a learning experience than anything that a city of concrete could ever create.

teach children that they are unique... and that all people are unique... that we each have different talents that fill a role in society... that societies work together... if we have more than we need we can afford to share some with less fortunate... if we are in need don't be afraid to ask a friend, familly member or a neighbor for help... that love is precious but hard work so don't give it away to someone who's all lip service.... that every person is equally valued so do something you are happy doing not something people will kiss your butt over, (those jobs you never know who your friends are till it's too late) these are some of the things I've taught my son.... what I gave my son while growing up is... the knowledge he is always loved and the right to stand up to me when he thinks I'm wrong.... (he won his first big argument with me when he was 5, what a proud moment that was.... now I'm certain no matter who he encouters in life he won't be afraid to stand up for himself and his own conscience)

As a parent, my goal has always been to teach my children to be able to cope and succeed in life.

We do not teach them to focus on material things, although they have plenty of those. Instead, we teach our kids that

The grades you get in classes are your paycheck. If you don't turn in the work, you don't get paid.

We also teach our kids to think critically. We tell them the good and bad and let them (when appropriate) make their own decisions. It takes a lot more time to do this, but when they are adults, they need to understand WHY they do things, rather than blindly follow the rules (and yes, I am a fundamentalist christian who believes this).

We also teach our kids that their bodies are their temple. They only get one body in this world and it is important to be careful about what you put inside of your body.

There are so many other ideas, but these are the basics.

Add to your Q. Kind of confusing. But my son and daughter are taught math, science and how to read. They are well liked and have been commended on their behavior at school, their ability to play with others and share.

And I have raised them Atheist.

If I raised them in a religion, I can imagine they would be subject to some seriously misguided information.

I suppose you think this society is "dangerous" though the FBI reports a massive decline in index crimes. We are safer than we were 40 years ago!

I have two toddler girls and I think this all the time. I've been thinking I'll say when the time come that first, they are worth waiting for. Think about your future husband. I will teach them drugs will ruin your life and relationships. I will teach them now a good example and about God because lets face it, People who do not believe in God are, I just don't have words for. I can not begin to understand them. Look around, everywhere is evidence of a God. That is what I will teach my girls, regardless if it is popular in "society" or not. Wouldn't you rather live like there is a God and die to find out there isn't or live like there is no God and die to find out there is.

Just because you won't win doesn't mean you shouldn't fight.

Assume the best in people, they'll prove you right or wrong within the first few words out of their mouths.

Just because someone says they are telling the truth doesn't mean that they actually are. If religion, politics or love are involved, it's actually a pretty safe bet that they aren't.

Eventually, you will die. I know, it's hard to believe. The sooner you accept that and move on, the better.

Don't make any claims unless you can back them up.

I have a son, and I also have 2 nieces. I would teach them all the same thing: be kind, but be wary of trusting people who haven't proven to be worthy of your trust. Look out for yourself, because everyone else in the world is looking out for his or her own self. Be honest and fair. And always be aware of your surroundings.

Always watch your back, because it's hard to find anyone that you can trust completely. And everything in this world revolves around money and politics, so get a very good education! Have a strong religious foundation because it will help you deal with all that life throws at you.

Reason, logic, and critical thinking.

I would teach them not to just believe something because it sounds nice, or its something you really want to believe. I'd teach them to look at the evidence and learn how to tell when someone is saying something without any basis.

I would teach that to either a son or daughter.
