A very, very good question that really is beyond the scope of this forum. This topic is very hot in sociology and psychology circles right now.

The impact of the uncertainty is huge. My daughter graduated from USF in May. Two thirds of the graduating class of about 1,200 were women.

As society has evolved, so has the dominant roles for men and women. As homes have become two income households....it is becoming necessary for men to share in the household responsibilities. It should now be a team effort to clean the house, get the groceries, taxi the children, etc... However, some men still expect the woman to do this by herself, after working a full 40+ hour week as well. This is wrong.

Many men use the Bible and point out that it says that women should be submissive, and that men should be head of the woman....I say bologna...if your wife has to work, and you cannot sustain your household on your income alone...then you sir, have relegated your position as soul authority...and because the woman shares in your responsibililty of providing for the family...the man should be held to sharing all other responsibilities of the woman as well.

This is not a bad thing....However, men cannot have it both ways.

I don't think that men and women have broad-sweeping defined roles in our society today. We live in a world where stereotypes are being blown apart, and people have long since moved past the concept of the man being the breadwinner and the woman cooking, cleaning, and having the babies.

IMO, we live in a much more "individualized" world. Instead of fitting ourselves into a certain place, we mold our world and our lives to fit us. So a man's role is probably determined by what he can best provide for himself or his family.

Edit: Of course, now you're just being silly. The continuation of the race requires a procreation process. Since men obviously have no uterus to carry a child, they won't be getting pregnant anytime soon. The question of who carries and delivers offspring has nothing to do with society -- its a question of biology.

The fact is, we live in a society now where a mother could easily go to work and a man could choose to be a stay at home dad, and this would be perfectly acceptable -- even if it wasn't understood by everyone or agreed upon by everyone. My brother happens to be a wonderful cook and prepares about 90% of the meals for his wife and children. In the 1950's, you probably wouldn't have openly heard about things like this.

Not only are we living in a more individualized society, we're living in a society that is *attempting* to move towards equality ... that men and women are social equals and both are capable of providing the same services to the family/community.

Men are being emasculated metaphorically, and society is going into a state of flux. When I was young, most women were still housewives, and there were fewer women than men in college and in the professions. Now, we are seeing women graduating from college in greater numbers than men, and in the major metropolitan areas of the country, women are EARNING more than men for the SAME job.

Catching up to that trend, but still far behind, are the paternalistic aspects of a man's role. The idea used to be that a woman goes from her dad's house to her husband's house, and her husband was charged with the OBLIGATION to support his wife. No obligation the other way existed. That's why alimony was so prevalent, because if you're going to leave your wife you still have to support her. The same thing with men buying women gifts, paying for all the dates, and buying the engagement rings, etc. etc. etc.

Now, in this era of equality, we see the frustration in women who "can't find a real man" anymore (because the men are earning less and being perceived as "deadbeats"), and women also can't find a "gentleman" anymore. Men are, as a result, developing a sense of powerlessness in the world, where they're appointed, biological role as the dominant provider and protector is no longer needed.

Man's role is becoming simply that of an assistant - not even a partner -- to a woman. Women claim the greater right to the babies, because they bear them and give birth to them. And men have the obligation to provide support, and that's about it. Soon, when our sperm donation is not needed, our roles will be even less.

And now, with the increased technology in mechanical pleasure.... we won't be able to compete with the toys...... our days are numbered.....

A man's role is what he chooses it to be. Any person's role in this society, in this modern day, is what he or she chooses it to be, and it's not - or shouldn't be - predetermined by anyone else. I think that's a good thing.

I hope that roles are not determined by the sex but by the identity of the person.

Nothing is what it use to be.
Need to realize that if you want a man like they use to be then go to sleep and stir him up in your dreams.
They don't exist anymore.
Sorry

It may not be what it used to be, but what it should be has and will never change.

People don't always do what is best.
