When I consider the Ten Commandments, I quickly come to the realization that I have broken God's laws. No matter how hard I try to live up to them, I cannot. In fact, I fall short of God's standard everyday. So, I had to face that fact and look for another way to be acceptable to God. Since I could not make myself acceptable to God by living up to God's commandments I had to find another way.
Yes, God's laws can have a curbing affect on ones desire to sin, but the mere fear of doing something wrong doesn't take us far enough.
Yes, God's laws do allow us to measure ourselves against God's standard, which is perfection and we ALL realize that we fall short.
Yes, God's laws help us to identify and avoid sins wherever possible, but we still sin and God's law says that if we break one law, we are guilty of breaking them ALL.
God's laws teach us that no one can measure up to God's standard of perfection by living according to the Ten Commandments. It cannot be done, PERIOD!
The Ten Commandments are therefore a warning sign.
They warn us that we need a Savior and they say to us, "You cannot enter this way! (by the law)". They direct us to Jesus Christ instead, who did live a perfect life, without sin. He did that for ALL of us because none of us can do it ourselves. God sent Jesus, His only begotten Son to fulfill the righteous requirements of the law on our behalf, but we have to each of us individually, accept that. He can offer it, but it does us no good at all if we do not take possession of it.

The 10 Commandments can be described as...
(1) A RULER to measure our lives against God's standards
(2) A TEST of our Love for God. Jesus said "If you love me you will keep my commandments".
(3) An educational TEACHING in good citizenship behaviours

Not really. The 10 Commandments seems to be something people are fond of talking about, but people are not fond of knowing much about them. Most people can't name them all, let alone properly define what is a violation of them.
What does it mean to commit adultery, for example? Is it getting remarried after being divorced? Is it anytime one has more than one wife (people in the old testament had more than one wife quite often -- like David, Solomon, etc.)?
What does it mean to bear false witness against thy neighbor? Is it any form of lying? Is it only lying under oath?
What does it mean to not make any graven images? Any image? Or only images that one bows down to and worships?
What does it mean to remember the Sabbath and keep it holy? Does that mean that Saturday is the holy day, since Saturday is the Seventh Day and Sunday the first? Is Sunday the Christian sabbath (careful, most Christian denominations officially say Sunday is a day of Christian worship, but NOT the Sabbath Day)?
The 10 Commandments do little to provide guidance, other than symbolically as a symbol of "doing right."

The Hebrew word for commandment can be translated "to show" The commandments can be thought of as words or laws that show the way of life. Because of the proclivity that is in humanity to sin, obeying the commandments keeps us safe until humanity can find and live from the law of life, the wordless Word written on the human heart. See Jer 31:31-33

That is assuming you see what they say against as sins.
I would say to go listen to George Carlin's take on the 10 commandments. It is very informative.
But take, "thy shall not covet thy neighbor's goods"......if we didn't covet our neighbor's stuff, we wouldn't go out and buy stuff and then our economy would suck more than it does now.
The first three being only relevent if you believe in a god....
Honor your mother and father.....some parents don't deserve to be honored just for being parents.
Thou shall not steal......this is one of the more relevent ones.
Thou shall not kill.......crusades, and witch trials, inquisition ring a bell? Yeah, no hypocrisy there.
Thou shall not bear false witness.....don't lie. Again, I see nothing wrong with this one.
Thou shall not cover thy neighbor's wife......a fantasy never hurt anybody.
Forgive me for any I missed, I haven't been a christian in a decade.

There is only one path to follow--yours!
God has no need to command, only men have such needs. There are no sins. There is no devil. There is no hell. You cannot harm God with whatever you think, do, or say. The good and the bad are manifestations from the exact same source, you could not know the difference otherwise. You don't need Jesus because you don't need saving. God requires nothing from us.
YOU ARE GOD AND SO IS EVERYONE ELSE.

The ten commandments tell you what behaviors will make you fall into sin and tell you to avoid them.

(4) they are commands from God as to what to do and what not to do (same as a mother to a child). This is what is right and wrong, ie, this IS sin.

They are a good guide for us to live and not hurt others, but they were done away with when Christ came to earth and died for us-he instituted a new law. It was the law of love and basically, the golden rule, "Treat others the way you want to be treated." This law was superior in that it gave a reason-LOVE-for not infringing on other people.
