Beginners can begin on any instrument. You should be asking yourself 'what instrument do I really want to play?' and then go and learn that instead of opting for what you or somebody else thinks is an 'easy' instrument. They are all difficult when you start and they all get easier as you get better at it.

I would only assume that the instrument itself wouldn't affect whether or not you can play. maybe it's just a higher/lower quality than others. If you know how to read music, it'll help you a lot when you're learning to play. If you don't want to take lessons, get a book for beginners, showing you how to hold it, and postions for various notes. I would reccomend some lessons though, at least to get you going. My first instrument was an alto sax, and I was fine after some lessons, you really just have to have the patience to pratice. It won't sound very good at first. Actually it sometimes sounds like a foghorn. But it'll get better, just practice. :D

Yes! It helps to learn if you love the music and the instrument, as you are more dedicated to learning than you would be with a 'starter' instrument that you are not as passionate about.

lol - the usual route is recorder...then clarinet...then alto...then soprano.
firget that - music teachers suk! go straight for the soprano and if there are things you think you can learn then go back to the clarinet(particularly embrochure...face muscles basically!)
alto sax is easier than clarinet, imo, having played both to a high level - clarinet is more expressive, again imo, and that's the hard thing to really live in, but totally go for it dude!
