I look at "format" as the fix of last resort and, personally, would not do it unless there was no other way. Have you tried a Windows Repair? I will include information on that. Following Repair, I will include information on formatting.

System restore has an option to fully restore the system back to original status. Go into there and follow the steps.
However, if you are unable to perform that, you will need to run the system restore disks that came with the PC. (Provided you received them when you bought it.)

if no cd came with comp try pressing f10 upon rstarting the pc then click the advanced tab keep clicking next from there.
if you have a disc put it in reboot and see if it has a reformat option on it.
what your wanting to do is called reformatting.

if you are using windows its just easy. you need to make a bakup of your registry if you want all your progs and apps to remain the same. then just install another copy of windows by deleting the folder on ms-dos. the new OS will run smooothly and just import all the registry you saved. all your data will remain safe (by not formatting) and windows will operate as new

when you turn on your computer, the first screen you see will have 3 alternatives along the bottom, just click on "SYSTEM RESTORE"and follow the instructions. Good luck!

If you have your OS CD (Windows, Linux, etc) than what you need to do is format your hard drive. To do this go to this website and follow the steps.
