following information: i am a 33 year old male weighing 200 pounds. i am somewhat muscular but with a size 38 waist. the following has caused me to maintain my current weight but has not allowed me to lose weight: i do an hour of walking 5 days a week. i lift weights once a week for an hour. my average breakfast is a large bowl of cereal. my average lunch is 2 slices of pizza or a turkey sandwich, tuna sandwich, or other type of sandwich sometimes with a glass of water, sometimes with a coca cola. my average dinner could be a large bowl of pasta, chicken with vegetables, chinese food, or some other recipe my wife cooks up. i sleep 7 hours a night. the only time i could really squeeze in more exercise would be by getting up at 5 am in the morning or after my kids go to sleep at 9 at night. i take lipitor (statin) daily and would probably prefer not to attempt to take any diet pills. what changes do i need to make to change my body to 30 pounds lighter and more muscular?

1) ignore the people trying to sell you miracle drugs.
2) you need to eat about 2000-2200 calories a day., try dividing them into 3 meals and 3 snacks, the meals being about 400 calories and the snacks about 200-300 each.
3) drink lots of water. all the time. at least 1-2 glasses an hour.
4) try changing one hour of walkin into weight training, it increases your muscle mass and also your metabolism.
5) take the oils out of your meals. chinese food and pizza (that's not home made) contains massive amounts of fat.
6) avoid "empty" calories such as coke and avoid diet drinks because they contain bad stuff (like sulphoric acid and sweeteners). when you eat the turkey sandwich, skip the mayo.
for breakfast try eating an egg or two with a roll (or 2 slices of good bread). this is filling and contains protein, which keeps you satisfied better than just cereal and milk. remember that a "portion" of cereal is just 1-1.5oz. have you tried measuring how much you eat?
and most important: write down every single thing you eat... even if it's one almond or one nut, and calculate the calories (more or less) every day.

good luck.

you need to be losing no more than 1-2 pounds a week, and remember, if you're buildin muscle, you might gain weight but lose inches around ur waist.

This is a quick fix. Cut out the pizza, cola and chinese food. Lift weights 3x week and do some pushups, lungs and squats for 20 minutes after your kids go to bed. If you can, jog some during your walks. Your exercise is fine, but your diet is not good. Drink diet cola if need be. But your pizza and cola is looking at 600+600+300 = 1500 calories for lunch! Make that big bowl of cereal one serving size (you need to measure) and put a banana in it. Eat an apple on the way to work and drink lots of water at work. Try to eat a snack of a fruit or raw veggie at 10, 3, and 8p. I bet you'll drop that weight pretty quickly with some fine-tuning to your diet. And lose the pasta!

1. cut the coca cola
2. reduce portion at dinner
you don't mention any snacks like potato chips or any eating out like fries or shakes.
so if you are doing that, cut it out
3. do more active things with the kids like running around outside, biking with them, swimming, canoeing, running in the sprinkler. implement activity during family time - camping, hiking, basketball, volleyball, etc. working out doesn't have to be separate from the kids. this one will gain you the most because it also improves relationships, family, kids' fitness levels and muscle tone.
4. watch the garnishes, salad dressing and cheese sauces etc that's on your food. and reduce the portions.
5. you don't mention any alcohol, so make sure you don't drink any.
6. switch to skiim milk with your cereal, use whole grain cereal without sugar (something like kashi)
