Your close, but you missed the mark on one word. "leader"...
The church should have no leaders, they should have "servants". Jesus Christ was the ultimate servant. And that is what people like myself and other pastors are, servants or "Under-Shepherds"...
The role of the Elder, Pastor, Deacon in a church is to be a servant. To serve the master of the sheep, the "Good Shepherd", Christ Himself.
We as Pastors are not leaders, but servants whose job it is to watch over the sheep of Jesus Christ, to make sure the wolves do not bother them. And when a pastor stands before the BEMA Judgement Seat of Christ, that pastor will be held accountable for each and every sheep under their control.
As soon as someone in the church claims to be a "leader", you had better set them straight, and remind them that they are servants, and had better re-read the book of Isaiah to see an example of the suffering servant...

Not at all. At that time God had placed "Judges" over Israel, but Israel wanted to be like the other nations and have a king. It was a rejection of God as their king. In the New Testament God places apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers. The church "needs" these men and women because God has given them to the church to equip the saints for the work of the ministry. Let's appreciate them.

God told Samuel that the people of Israel weren't rejecting Samuel, they were rejecting God. The New Testament says in 1st Timothy2:5- " For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus".

Yes, good point. Man's lack of faith in God leads him to need a man to lead the group, whatever that group might be. And in Samuel, God was offended as he is today. Not that we shouldn't have overseers in the church to help people and make sure things get done.

It depends on the church and/or religion. Some certainly do seem to have a human inserted between the person and God. I think our trust should be in God, not a living human intermediary.

I dont think that is exactly right.
If you are preaching the Gospel and you reach new converts then they are expecting you are someone to instruct them in their new found salvation.
Apostal Paul figured out real quickly that the new Christains looked to him for guidance and as they grew in their faith the ones that begin to teach too still looked to Paul for help in handling situations. The denominations today have been structured very much the same way as they did it then

Israel was always messing up somehow.
They really messed up when they failed to recognize the coming of their Messiah.
Jesus appointed St. Peter as the leader of the church, because grace makes all the difference.
