I'm noticing an alarming new trend here on Y answers and I wondered if anyone else has noticed or can clarify...? People, when responding to the "I want to breed my pet" questions say that those of us who are against it are breeders ourselves and don't want the competition...WTF? How many times do I have to explain that I am an animal shelter volunteer, I've seen healthy dogs and cats die, I get sick to death of all the jerks that don't deserve a pet, and I don't want any more homeless animals? How do I explain this to these people? All mature comments appreciated...

I noticed none of 'them' have the nuts to answer this question. How strange...
Believer- where are you? Is there some way my no-kill shelter can help with your kill shelter?

These people don't realize that serious breeders don't worry about the "competition" because we do so little breeding and our dogs are in such demand that we have waiting lists. I'm usually referring people to other breeders that I trust simply because I don't have puppies often enough to supply all the worthy homes that come my way, let alone the large number of people I WOULDN'T sell to.
And I'm NOT automatically in favor of spay/neuter IF the owner is RESPONSIBLE enough to maintain an intact animal without letting it get bred.

You can't Those people are the ones that have already made up their minds and are looking for that one validation answer in the other 19 that show up that tell them NO, you are wrong, don't do it, or whatever else we say.
I am getting to the point where I want to post that terrible youtube video on the pet overpopulation in this country (the one where the man throws his living breathing german shepherd in the back of the garbage truck) to all these people that want to breed.
I am against it (irresponsible breeding) whole-heartedly. I think breeding should require education, classes, certificates in first aid for dogs and puppies, a certificate stating that you passed all your classes, an examination and a license. I mean, lordy, you have to do more to get a driver's license than you do to bring LIFE into this world!
I'm sick too. I live in a town where there is a kill-shelter. I am in the process right now of trying to find a dalmation rescue organization to take a dalamation whose sole existence is in a 8x20 foot kennel filled with poo because his "mom" won't let him in the house. I refuse to take him to our shelter - he's 10. No one has ever worked with him. He doesn't know basic commands. You think anyone is going to adopt a 10 year old dog that isn't even potty trained? Not to mention, in the month of July my shelter received 1,315 surrenders and they don't have room for that many animals - so where do people think they go? They magically fly off to la la land? If they don't have to see it - then they can ignore it. Isn't that how a lot of us work?
Well, in the you-tube video, you see it - the death, the gassing, the murder, the shooting of animals - you see it, in all its glory. Maybe that's what those people need as a wake-up call. I just haven't had the guts to post it again.

Well i do agree with you and i am on your side! BUT.... if everyone in the world stopped breeding and every cat and dog were spayed or neutered in time there would be no more...no more full breeds for ppl who actually care for one.... no more puppies for anyone. I think that breeding is OK just as long as your responsible and you find top notch homes for the puppies there is nothing wrong with sharing a breed with someone else just as long as you do it the right way. I love dogs i have five and all of them are spayed and neutered bc i didn't want the challenge of handling puppies and more vet costs and then finding homes. If you cant afford it and your not going to do it the right way then you shouldn't breed. But if you know what your doing and can do it no problem then more power to you.Ive worked in an animal shelter and i know several people who own their own search and rescue i know how bad it is and how bad it can get. What i think is dumb is people trying to come up with new breeds like the cockapoo or the labradoodle i think those dumb asses should be punished...dont you think its a little like playing god coming up with new breeds like that?

Well I was a breeder for a very long time. I'm very proud of the Golden's I bred. I took all the right steps, learned first then had a mentor, then CH a few of my Golden's, Then decided to breed. This took me years to learn and do.
Golden's are one breed that can have terrible problems if not bred correctly. When I read how some treat the dogs either when in heat or when they don't have the foggiest clue what to do when the dog is in labor then Yes I do get every upset.
There are no short cuts, there are no excuses for ignorance when breeding, there are no excuses for not knowing even the basics of dog care. Other than laziness, ignorance, and the total lack of willingness on the owners part to think and read and ask their vet.
As for those who shout that it's only those of us who breed are jealous of cutting into their profits. It too stupid a comment to even respond to. All my pups were sold and spoken for before the mating even happened.
I've done Golden rescue. I've driven hundreds of miles to pick up dogs in distress and bring then to safety. I've seen the results of bad breeding too.
How I can convince others of this? Well I'm still trying to here every day.
Oh and if that is to spay or neuter the dogs then so be it!
Good question and keep up the great work your doing too.

Part of the problem is we are breeders. Its not the competition we are worried about. Its the junk they are using to breed. They think just because their dog has papers its of breeding stock. How many of them have traveled to other states looking for the right dog? And I don't mean by Internet. How many years experience of breeding or time spent with a mentor do they have.......The answer is NONE! YA is not the place to research breeding. They haven't a clue what it takes to be a breeder. What the expense is or how a dog can suffer or even die. All because they want to make a profit or are too impatient or broke to do it properly. I guess any excuse will do.

I too have told people to consider getting their pets fixed, but I have never had anyone accuse me of being a breeder. Maybe its the way you word it, or tell them to get their animals fixed. I suggest getting their pets neutered/spayed to them, but I also give them web sites of information on breeding.
You can't force people to want to neuter/spay their pets, you can only give them the information and then hope they'll do the right thing. I too have worked at an animal shelter, I have also been at one time or another a foster parent for both cats and dogs. My circumstances though, have changed whereas I cannot do that at this point. Maybe someday, I could do that again.
Right now I'm happy with the 2 cats I have, both of which I rescued and are spayed and neutered.

Is really amazing in a negative way...how many backyard breeders and other inresponsible humans beings react to a much needed SOLUTION to a EVERYDAY problem. I've seem some of those backyard breeders here in my town, and I've try to talk to them about spayin or neutering their pets....and some of them were extremely agressive towards my sugestion. They say that they will not fix their animals because that's is how they make their money.so they rather exploit the lifes of INNOCENT living creatures than do what is RIGHT. This world is NOT a SAFE place for animals.....They are in the hands of back yard breedes= puppy mills and than they can and most cases will end up in shelters that will kill them.It is a vicious cycle.

I am not a breeder, never have been. All of my dogs have been rescues & there has been many a time that I have had more dogs than the County will allow & had to hide them.
Having worked with several rescue groups & efforts on my own it just makes me sick to see someone that has no knowledge breeding their pets. I have preached & practiced what I preach.
We can tell others our views but the ignorant ones think that it does not apply to them. We can't force our views (unfortunetley) on others, all we can do is to keep saying the same thing over & over again.
The licensening of breeders needs to be stricter with inspections of breeding sights. Breeding of pets needs to be stopped.
As a Pet Groomer I have seen the best of the best & the horrid night mares of incompetent breeders.
I am always amazed that people think they have a pure breed with just AKC papers. Their ignorance is astounding.
I agree with you 100% plus. But, like you said, how do we get people to pay attention. As a trainer I'd get so agravated cause owners would screw up the training & then blame the trainer. Once again the ignorance is showing.

After awhile on Y answers, I think I'm no longer surprised by the questions and answers I see. I also volunteer with a humane society and have seen the things you've seen and I'm amazed when I get that response or a thumbs down for giving the basically the same answer as you.
You can't explain it to these people - they are going to do it regardless of what we say. there are a few people who don't really know and may think twice and change their minds and those are the ones I hope to help.
I also have noted that the questions and answers in the morning hours are more mature. As the day goes on, you more young kids who don't like being told they shouldn't do something or just want to be smart alecks. Just a trend I've noticed.

I think a lot of the problem is that people think their dog is the best and they want other people to have a dog like theirs, so they breed them. They probably don't realize most breeders don't breed until they have at least a certain amount of buyers interested.
I've also heard a lot of people say they want their children to experience the "miracle of birth" and don't think about whet they're going to do with the puppies.
And then theres those people that think all female dogs need to have a litter of puppies before they are spayed. And then they see the pups and want more.
