I'm pretty sure that it is the imprint of a face in blood on a cloth. Whose face or whose blood is pretty much unverifiable. If it was Jesus' as claimed, we don't really have another imprint of his face to compare it to, or a sample of his DNA to compare the blood to. If it was Jaques de Molay's face, the Knights Templar would have destroyed any evidence of that (as any good conspirators should). This does not necessarily mean that the Knights Templar were conspirators, but that if they were, they did a good job of removing the evidence.

Thr shroud is a fake, it was made at some point in the Middle Ages, This has been showed by three independant sources, using carbon dating. On wikipedia you can read about a few theories. Th main facts are that this person would be too tall for the time and would not bear enough Middle-Easter features.

There seemed to be some evidence for it originating in the "Holy Land" but most of the evidence points to it being created during the crusades as a relic for money, just as many fake pieces of the cross were sold.
Edit:
The shroud has only been carbon dated once. The Vatican has denied further attempts at having it dated again.

The shroud of Turin was never proven to be real. I don't know where some people get their information from. It's old, just not old enough to be from that time.

The Shroud of Turin is real and is has been proven.
When a team of scientists dated the Shroud, they dated a piece of material that was repaired in the 15th century. So scientists dismissed the Shroud being 2000 years old.
Later on, A group of historians and bible scholars told them, they dated a part of the fabric that was repaired. They dated another piece and they found out the Shroud is close to 2000 years old.
So you draw your own conclusion.

Does it really matter? Unbelievers call for proof, proof, but as was said in the parable with the rich man and Lazarus,Luke 16,If they sent someone back from the dead, they wouldnt believe him either.
