Johnny Cash also wrote lines like "I killed a man just to watch him die." Smokey Robinson is most famous for "My momma told me, you better shop around." Elvis' movements were too sexual to be shown on television from the hips down. J.S. Bach wrote glorious church music because that is where the money was back then.

I think you'd be safer sticking with The Old Blind Boys of Alabama and Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

Um, it's only the secular music from those people that I would call good, for the most part. A few exceptions, but Elvis' gospel stuff is awful - nothing like Jailhouse Rock! RunDMC made their mark with a cover of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way," nothing religious about THAT song!

Man, you are SO right.

I am a pagan, and most neo-pagan music is so depressing and chanty. ALL in natural minor keys. Its supposed to be a joyous fetility religion!

Heck, Christianity is supposed to be a death cult of some sort (no offense) but your music ROCKS! And you didn't even touch on anything BEFORE Bach!

Are those supposed to be "Christian" musicians?

Well, I'm sure they are - nominally. In most of the cases you've cited, though, their music isn't specifically "Christian." Maybe they dabbled in gospel a bit.

In a spirit of generosity I'll gloss over the fact that you think the Backstreet Boys, Boys to Men, and Brooks and Dunn are "righteous."

It goes without saying that ALL specifically "Christian" bands suck, without exception. They're vicariously embarrassing to listen to.

being a Christian myself, i am afraid i must confess that i absolutely abhor most modern music that is specifically labelled "Christian." my pastor refers to it as "7-11 songs: the same 7 words repeated 11 times."
U2 is great because they don't feel the need to be so obvious; Christian undertones are the most meaningful because it actually takes a thought process to create.
