If I have a 30 min break after every hour spent on the computer would it be okay to spend for example 8 hours on the computer?

Or even if I am taking breaks does the number of hours still matter?

Can someone give me a rule of how long I should spend and break times etc.

Thanks alot.

I think it's better to take a 15 minute break every hour or less than that. During that time it's helpful to look into the far distance, because the muscles in the eye can get lazy simply staring at a something quite close.
Your eyeline should be level with the top of the monitor, and your feet should be touching the floor.
Of course the screen flickers at about 50x a second depending on the screen type, I have a TFT monitor, this doesn't flicker unlike the old type of monitors but I find it incredibly bright so I have the screen brightness turned down to min. A friend suggested to me wearing sunglasses when using a PC as this was his practise.

A break every hour is considered good practice, but a half-hour break is rather generous.
(Unless it's your own time, or you are doing something else productive at work... just not being on the computer)
Ten minutes would be fine.

The important thing is to establish good full distance focus in those breaks. If you find that difficult relaxation eye exercises are available.

Other issues for prolonged office/vdu work...
Check you have a good posture and that
screen flicker and contrast glare are minimised.

Have your refraction and binocular stability checked.
Small problems that might not normally matter might make a noticeable difference when faced with 8 hours on a vdu.

I have been using computers and playing video games on average about 50 hours a week every week since I was 3. I'm 22 now and I have better than 20/20 vision. I think it's a myth that too much computer screens and TV screens damage your eyes.

You have people who work on computers, 8 hours a day 5 days a week and I don't think that they would have 30Min's break every hour, I think that it up to the person as to how long they can be on the computer, myself I go on the computer every day but I don't do no more than three hours.

Spending time on the computer won't damage your eyes-but staring on that screen will increase the evaporation of your tear film.if you experience blurred vision or foreign body sensation you should use eye drops to support your tear film.but dizziness or head aching etc.. are different things and require an immediate medical examination.

i just want to add that all of the suggestions are for possibly reducing headaches and eyestrain, and *maybe* for decreasing the possibility of further myopia progression.

but staring at a computer screen *CANNOT* cause "damage" to your eyes, no matter how many hours in a day you do it. that is a myth/urban legend/wives' tale
