My son is 18 months old and has found a way to crawl out of his crib in the middle of the night. He has been sleeping in his crib throughout the night, by himself for almost a full year now with no problems, then last night I heard him downstairs crying for me and my wife. The crib is not near anything for him to step on to get out, he is just really tall for his age and can put his leg on the top and manuever himself out. I have lowered the crib as far down as it goes and have no idea how to keep him in it. He is not going to sleep with me and my wife, that will only create a bigger problem down the road.

You can either get a crib tent, which fits on top of the crib to keep him safe, or you can just lower the side of the crib so he can get out of the crib without getting hurt and put a baby gate on his door.

It's time to break it down into a toddler bed if yours does that. If not, you are going to need to buy a toddler bed. At age 2, that's when it's time for kids to be out of a crib. Since you're is tall for his age, it'll be time now. You really don't want his next fall to really hurt him. Make sure you have side rails on the bed so he can't roll out in the middle of the night.

I would do this as soon as possible so he doesn't get hurt. Let him help pick out bed sheets so it'll be fun for him to sleep in it. Good luck!!

It is time to get him used to the idea of a "big boy" bed. You can get a toddler bed or maybe convert your crib if it has that option. The same mattress should fit either way. You may have to put up baby gates to keep him confined a little (at the bottom of the stairs or in his doorway), but he is more likely to get hurt falling from his crib than from a toddler bed.

He might be ready for a toddler bed. Regardless to a crib or toddler bed, put a safety gate in his doorway to his room that way the door is still open but he cannot get out. You'll be able to sleep better knowing he's not roaming the house while you're sleeping. Just be sure his room is babyproofed!

It is going to sound early but it may be time to get him a toddler bed.

You don't want him to climb out of a crib in the middle of the night and fall and bump his head. I would definitely get a gate that he can't climb over and put it at his door so he can't wonder the house.

Definately do no let him in your bed. It is extremely hard to break that habit.

To keep him from falling out and possibly injuring himself it will be impossible to keep him in it now. It is time to get him a toddler bed with a separate bed rail that will keep him from rolling off of the side. These are built very low to the floor, and if he should get out of the bed he will not fall over the high rail and hurt himself. I found that out myself when my daughter managed to crawl over the crib rail for the first time, and she hit the floor bruising her forehead. She was only 14 months old when she did this.

Get a toddler bed and the gate suggestion is a good one.You don' want him hurting himself by falling out of bed or down the stairs.
Putting his crib or bed in your room is definetly a NO NO and so is sleeping with you and your wife.I agree fully.
It does create even more problems and one that is even harder to break.

That is a tough one! When my kids started crawling out, I would let them sweat it out when they came looking for me. I think they felt safer in the crib, so I would make sure it did not become a game to them in that they get out and I put them back. Make it so it scares them somewhat when they get out by themselves. I am pretty sure if you make it uncomfortable somehow for him, he will want to stay in there to sleep. Also, it may be time very soon to graduate him to a small bed and then just teach him to stay in bed.

Good luck!

They has crib tents that you can buy - frankly, I think it's cruel and woundn't use them but that is your choice. Next step would be a "big-boy" bed. To keep him in it, tell him that he can only have the big boy bed if he can show you what a big boy he is. And that means staying in his room until it's time to wake up.

I have the same problem. I have to sit in my son's room until he falls asleep or he will just keep getting out and going in my room. I wish there was a solution but i mean how would you keep them in there?? You can't really. He comes in my room in the middle of the night when he wakes up. It sucks...Good Luck!!
