Hi 76,

I'm assuming from the question line you are schizophrenic. There are a lot of different disorders that are lumped under this label. Depression can be a big factor in many of them. If you are taking an anti-psychotic it is important to take the doses as prescribed and religiously for them to properly work for you. There are many different kinds of anti-depressants. The ones I have taken ( elavil and sertraline) seem to help but are no silver bullet. It is also necessary to gain a renewal of your thinking habits from negative thinking (which cause depression) to positive thinking which requires your willful participation and possibly psychotherapy. Some anti-depressants may have a side effect of weight gain (sertraline doesn't) This is easily overcome by the simple expedient of just pushing away from the table.

It sounds to me like what you need more than anything is motivation. Disciplining yourself to regularly take your meds, stopping a habit of negativity, and getting wholeheartedly involved in your recovery.Try typing "self motivation" and"self motivation techniques" into Yahoo! web search and a number of links comes up.Wikipedia has a good summary.

Motivation requires a definite goal and the patience to discipline yourself to get there. Your goal should definitely be to recover. Try some of the advice given in these links. Good luck in getting moving again, good health, peace and love!

Taking your meds daily is the only way to know if they will work for you. I hope you're taking an anti-psychotic as well, though. It is customary for people with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia to want to get off their meds - resist this and keep in contact with your doctor. You can live a good life if you will do this.

Also, if you're gaining weight on one drug, talk to the doctor. Their should be an alternative that will help you lose.

Schizophrenia, is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a mental illness characterized by impairments in the perception or expression of reality, most commonly manifesting as auditory hallucinations, paranoid or bizarre delusions or disorganized speech and thinking in the context of significant social or occupational dysfunction. Onset of symptoms typically occurs in young adulthood, with approximately 0.4–0.6% of the population affected. Diagnosis is based on the patient's self-reported experiences and observed behavior. No laboratory test for schizophrenia exists.

An antidepressant, in the most common usage, is a psychiatric medication thought to alleviate clinical depression or dysthymia ('milder' depression). Drug groups known as MAOIs, tricyclics and SSRIs are particularly associated with the term. These medications are now amongst the most commonly prescribed by psychiatrists and general practitioners, and their effectiveness and adverse effects are the subject of many studies and competing claims
