Since you have clerical skills I'm sure you could do short term work for a temp service. If you are in a job you absolutely hate then you do need to find a different one. Keep in mind that you may not be hired for that "really good job with the city." At least the temp agency jobs could give you an idea of what other jobs are available in your area.

I would grit my teeth and bare it. Finding a job is a job. You are not 100% sure you will get the city job. I think you should stay at you r current job until you know for sure what is happening with the city job. It you don't get the city job then begin your job search again. Temp agencies are a short term job sitution until you find something more stable.

I'd work on finding an interim job, just so you feel like you are doing something proactively and have options. Sometimes just having the option to leave makes staying more palatable in the short run. what you want to avoid, in my opinion, is leaving a job with good benefits etc, for a temp job, and then having the other good job fall through. But if the current job is completely unworkable, you have to stay sane!
Good luck!

I agree with alot of the replies, go to a temp agency. We spend too much of our time at work to not enjoy it. Although it is hard to find a job that one truly loves to go to work, you should not wake up in the morning and hate the day. Life is too short to work for someone who is a horrible boss. I would suggest that you speak with your boss, not to criticize him/her or vent, but to professionally explain your frustration. I often find that I respect those that are up front with me in a professional manner, rather than those that never speak their minds. People, for the most part, are hired because they are people, not mindless robots.
On a separate note, read the book "FISH" It is a great book about changing the way you look at any job, any company, and how you can change your attitude to effect the entire organization.

Suck it up for 60 days, you don't want to make it seem like you can't stick to a job. If you don't hear anything by then, then it's time to quit, by then you would have shown that you at least tried to make it work for a few months and didn't give up at the first sign of a struggle.

If you can suffer through the process in your current job, without hauling off and slugging your boss (LOL) then hang in there until you hear about the City job.
It will look better on a resume. Good luck!
